Celebrity generosity knows few bounds. Mel Gibson gave the LAPD a piece of his twisted mind this weekend, and now
Cher is giving away HUMMERs to anyone who will pay. Well, it’s not quite what it sounds like—the sexagenarian superstar and future Vegas lounge act is auctioning off 700 of her most beloved belongings from her Malibu home, including a 2003 HUMMER H2 and several Bob Mackie gowns that just don’t “work” with the supreme off-roader. Cher says she’s giving away lots of the proceeds to charity, and expects to make $1 million or so via the Sotheby’s auctions. (Hands off the Gothic-revival brass bed, that’s ours!)

These new Mercedes C-Class pics were in our email box this morning, though the car itself isn't due until next year's Geneva motor show. As we've written about it before, the new C-Class will share more of its components than before with the larger E-Class, the next C will be more distinctive in its own right: Mercedes-Benz wants to position it as a true small sports sedan, rather than simply a smaller answer to the E.
The base engine will be a direct injection 1.8-liter four with horsepower from 150 to 190. The 2.5-liter V-6 will make 210 hp, while a 3.5-liter V-6 makes 270 hp. An AMG 5.4-liter V-8 will be stuffed into a special C-Class, churning out 400-410 hp to compete with the Audi RS4 and the next BMW M3. A 3.0-liter diesel is planned, as is an iDrive-like operating device similar to that found in the new S-Class. An all-wheel-drive system will be available.
The official launch of the new C-Class is expected for the Geneva Motor Show in 2007, with sales starting shortly thereafter. The wagon version will arrive at least six months after the sedan.

Snap, crackle, CRUNCH! If your breakfast cereal makes the last noise accompanied by the sound of teeth cracking, you can thank Ford Motor Company for hours of interesting dental work. The company, trying to keep a leg up on the market with the Fusion four-door, is stuffing 600,000 cereal boxes with toy Fusions, one of which will win its finder a new, real, life-sized and distinctly inedible Fusion. The cereals are Kellogg products, and will all be sold through Target stores — Froot Loops, Apple Jacks, Frosted Flakes, and Cocoa Krispies. One red Fusion in one box at one Target store will hold the winning car, the AP reports, adding that Ford’s Fusion sales have totaled more than 71,000 units since the beginning of the year.

It’s all the rage in New Zealand — outrage that is. A recent TV ad for the new Nissan Tiida, featuring sex-positive actress Kim Cattrall, in the island nation has been yanked by Nissan because the country’s morals-and-standards cops say it’s far too racy for the tube. The campaign — one of a string of ads for the Tiida, including
this one found on Aussie TV — are surely lewd enough for Cattrall’s smutty gal pals over at
Sex and the City. But really, what’s wrong with asking a car, “Why didn’t you tell me it was so big? I just wasn’t prepared for it!” Frankly, we hear it all the time.

Here’s one for the hippies, who are potentially the only folks left on the earth that can still translate Dylanese to English. The folk-rock icon is paying his own homage to the automobile this morning on
XM Channel 40, at 10 a.m., focusing his show on hand-picked tunes about the automobile. You’ll hear all the classics, “from Parliament’s My Automobile and Joni Mitchell’s Car on a Hill to Sonny Boy Williamson III’s Pontiac Blues,” XM promises, though we’re not sure if Dylan will include any of the Beach Boys classics we usually hear three times a day, even on the extraterrestrial radio network. Encores of the show will run as follows:
Deep Tracks® - XM 40 - Wednesday, July 19 – 10:00 AM. / Midnight ET; Encores: Fri. – 6:00 PM., Sun. – 8:00 AM., Mon. – 8:00 PM. ET
The Village - XM 15 - Thursday, July 20 - Noon ET, Encores: Sun. - Midnight, Mon. – 6:00 PM., Wed. – 6:00 AM. ET.
