GM Makes Trax - and Groove, Beat - for New York

Small cars are “the fastest-growing segment of the automotive market,” notes Dave Lyons, who heads Asian design operations for General Motors. On a global scale, minicars now account for about 5 percent of total sales, but by some estimates, Lyons notes, that could triple over the next decade. So it’s no surprise that General Motors has chosen to unveil three promising minicar concepts at this year’s New York International Auto Show, prototypes primarily developed at the former Daewoo operations, in Inchon, South Korea, but with the assistance of GM designers and engineers from around the world. Hear more about the Trax, Groove and Beat with publisher Paul A. Eisenstein. (STAY TUNED for more info on the Groove and Beat on April 4.)

Promises, promises-how many times have Detroit automakers given us "captive" imports only to make them orphans later on. Besides, they almost have never given us truly high MPG cars that are affordable. I'll keep driving my '91 Festiva that gets 42 MPG until they get it together.

Um, can we get a good manual transmission in these? And a good interior? And a good stereo (hopefully XM & Sirius will merge so I won't have to make that choice). And some good colors? And an interior that's not black or tan? Please, please, please. Otherwise, I'll keep my MINI.

Its great that GM has finally got its act together, and is taking the small car segment seriously. In many ways, all the bits were already there - the Spark and the European Opel Agila have 1.0-litre engines (totally different ones, by the way), and with an affordable production base in Korea (and CKD facilities in Thailand, India and China).
In Asia at least, Chevrolet has made a tremendous comeback with its Korean-based products in the half a decade since being launched. Trax, Groove and Beat, should they get into production, will really strengthen the brand, and bring some excitement into the econobox segment, both in Asia as well as in North America
