We tend to be a fairly conservative lot, us British drivers. We don’t like to stick out from the crowd too much in case we’re thought of as crass or vulgar. The most popular color to buy a car in has long been silver, but one U.K. company is now offering a variation on that them. Chrome is the new silver, with shiny body panels apparently set to be the next big thing.
MirraChrome is claimed to be the world’s most realistic chrome-effect paint finish, with 98 percent of the reflectivity of true chrome-plating. It’s the stuff was used on a Lamborghini Murcielago in the recent video by rapper 50 Cent.
“There’s plenty of interest in chrome, candy colours and other custom finishes, what with the TV shows [such as Pimp My Ride] and general interest in radical Sixties and Seventies automotive paintwork,” said Ray Penny. He’s manager of the Autopaint centre in Birmingham, England that’s now offering the shiny finish for the first time.
I’m not sure how you’d define “plenty of interest” but I’m not holding my breath until I see a MirraChrome car.—Richard Yarrow

June 11th, 2007 - 11:32 amI wouldn’t necessarily look for this to be used on entire cars - I’d more likely see it used for bumpers on retro-themed designs in place of the big old metal chrome bumpers.

June 11th, 2007 - 11:58 amA similar (I assume) process was used on the body panels for the 20th Anniversary Grave Digger monster truck. It was literally sprayed onto the metal and dried (cured?, hardened?, froze?) to a true mirror finish that then had graphics painted on top of it. Try that on a chrome bumper!

June 11th, 2007 - 12:47 pmI was channel surfing yesterday when I noticed Pimp My Ride did this to a Honda. In my opinion, I think it looks nasty. Looks like a 97-cent can of chrome spray paint applied to a car…
If it was a mirrored finish like that of polished aluminum or bright chrome… maybe, but neither will find their way onto any of my cars.

June 11th, 2007 - 1:03 pmI agree with Brian. I can see it used in the “traditional” bumper area of cars. Have to see it personally, but, in the pics, it looks more like polished aluminum than chrome. Still, it does offer a chance for the designers to get away from the generic look of todays bumpers.

June 11th, 2007 - 10:46 pmI cannot possibly imagine driving behind a chromed painted car like this in the summer trying to see where I’m going with the sun reflected into my eyes-onto EVERYTHING….What a STUPID idea-it wouldn’t work in the real world for that reason alone. YIKES !!!

June 12th, 2007 - 12:07 amA chrome plated car ha, you just don’t want to be the person driving behind one with the sun reflecting off every surface on your face and in your eyes! Same goes for night driving with your headlights shining on that chrome car! There was a reason car makers removed all those chrome garnish moldings around the windshield years ago! Hey, maybe you would start a brush fire from the sun’s intense reflection on the panel surfaces, if you parked the car in heavy grass or a weed field?

June 12th, 2007 - 2:05 amThe recent Mercedes Sauber F1 race car has a similar paint effect called ‘liquid silver’, and it is gorgeous from when see up close (a dark silver, something maybe darth vader would wear on the weekend). The mirra-chrome paint may be an appropriate color for a silver arrows Mercedes SL or an Audi R8 or TT, but a kia calipso/nissan sunny would not.
Audi and Jag had versions of their big aluminium sedans, the current XJ and the last A8 respectivley, that were introduced with ‘mirror’ finish, except in their cases they were the real thing. Just keeping it clean would be a nightmare.

June 12th, 2007 - 8:50 amWe use to have plenty of ‘Stainless’ Jeeps in the Philippines but was gradually phased out because of the glare of the reflections. I’d assume this Mirrachrome would produce the same glare.

June 12th, 2007 - 2:54 pmNo, liquid silver is quite different. It’s a lot more “matte”.
I agree with those who would find this useful for certain parts of a car, rather than the whole of it… but the SL does look DAMN GOOD!
