Which Concept Cars Should Be Built?
Email this page to your friend:
Over at the main site, we're talking about concept cars. Rex Roy chose ten from the remote and near past that for whatever reason, weren't built. Chrysler's Norsemen never even made it to an auto show, while the bastardized Pontiac Aztek we did finally get was so far from the concept design as to be a totally different car. We've chosen our ten - now tell us the ones we missed in the comments section below, and we'll cobble together a reader's version of the list for you.

There willl always be a place, though not a large one, in the market for unusually luxurious and expensive cars, and the Cadillac Sixteen Concept is among the most beautiful things to come out of Detroit in a long time. Its retro, of course, but it goes back to a time when size = power. If your 6 cylinder wasn't big enough, and the 8 cly just couldn't impress, well then you double the size and voila, you now have 1000 hp and a long, low, crisp and stunning car that'll likely blow the doors off the competition without any help from AMG...
I have to say i'm impressed with the new CTS, because it picked up a lot of cues from the sixteen, but its not quite there yet...

some of it sholud have been done, look now some of it are like out of grave(jaguar f type, chevy aztec, ford reflex, caddy 16, and the corvette w/ 4 wankel that woulld've been great to see like mazda RX).
some of other brands (protege) that 'die' young is BMW Z9, Toyota RSC, Pug's RC coupe.lot's of them still in my ngage gallery .
I'll make a list of them on why(spec, model, etc) these young models should've been made (at least limited unit). like the new HYdro7 BMW(7 series hydro-gasoline hybrid) that is only 3000 unit (sold out like a hot porsche carrera gt).It also kick the hell of MB's concept hydro(i think it was an A class shell).
See ya

I've always admired the original Virgil Exners K-310 concept car imported from Ghia in 1952-53 and the C200 convertible version. Surely they would have revived Chrysler from the early fifties doldrums which saw their market shrink from over 20%
market penetration to less than 13% and almost out of business. it wasn;t until 1955 that the new styling went into effect , but they never made back up to where they had been.
I also agree with Wayne graefen that the falcon sports car should have been built.
It was and continues to be a winner whereever its shown. The "dart' showcars were also spectacular.

The current Demon concept should be built. The Mazda MX-5 has proven that these things sell well when done right, as have the Solstice and Sky.
The M80 was a good concept, but I think they need to go smaller than that. The M80 should become the next Dakota, back to being a mid-size instead of full size.
The '99 Charger concept should become the basis for the next generation (LY) 'Charger'. give it sleek curves and that coke-bottle profile, and people will ignore the extra doors.

I find it funny to see the reference to Chrysler's sunken concept, the Norseman. Though design chief Virgil Exner played the grieving "parent," he was privately pleased to see that show car deep-sixed, later telling one of his relatives (whom I know) that it was about the worst of his concept vehicles. Ah, one man's art...

The prettiest concept car of recent years was the beautiful 1999 Dodge Charger. What Chrysler built instead is ugly by comparison. I was willing to write a check.

The Chevy Nomad 2003. It's still not too late. Great design is timeless.

I liked the Dodge Rampage. It seemed very buildable from a practicle stand-point. I agree with Robert that the auto industry needs a 21st century Beetle or better yet Model T. Inexpensive but very stout and would be desireable across class and culture lines.
