2008 MINI CooperReal estate is hurting across the country, and you've heard the incentives out there--free flat-screen TVs, association fees paid for a year.

One of the best incentives I've heard of is right down the street, at an Atlanta condo development called Aqua and another called Duo. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution says the developer of the project, Tivoli Properties, is giving away a MINI Cooper to buyers who sign up for units at either building.

The deal is thus: buy a two-bedroom condo at Duo, in Midtown (Georgia Tech, Margaret Mitchell House and gays) and you'll get a MINI Cooper Convertible valued at up to $25,000. Take a unit at the Aqua building in Castleberry Hill area (lofts, CNN, Aquarium) and you'll get a standard MINI Cooper valued at up to $20,000.

The deal's being offered, the paper says, because the developer is having problems selling the final cluster of condos in the buildings. The condos are priced from $229,000 to more than $1 million.

Have you heard of a better enticement for buying right now--one that includes a new set of wheels? Tell us in a comment.

Ford Spinning Smaller Truck from 2009 F-150

2009 Ford F-150Add Automotive News to the string of car outlets saying that Ford plans a Ranger replacement derived from the 2009 Ford F-150.

The weekly newser suggests this morning in its online edition that the Ranger replacement is being spun from the new F-150's platform. The new truck--dubbed internally as P525--will be lighter and slightly smaller than the new F-er, the News says.

The new truck might carry the name F-100, the old moniker for the full-size truck as late as the 1970s. It's likely that it will be built alongside the F-Series at Ford's Wayne, Mich., plant, which means the closing date for the Ford plant in St. Paul, Minnesota, is likely nigh.

The News also says the new truck will have clever cargo-organization space like other mid-size trucks like the Honda Ridgeline. A version of Ford's Ecoboost V-6 could be the powertrain.

Ford's plan seems to be like the Nissan tactic--Nissan's Frontier is based on the Titan. Being a former Ranger owner, I'm not sure if I would want a bigger truck--as TheCarConnection.com writes in our Bottom Line review of the 2008 Ford Ranger, one of its best and highest uses is as a four-cylinder work truck. Will that go away if Ford upsizes the Ranger into the F-100? Tell us in a comment below.

Audi A3 Gets the Clubsport Treatment

2008 Audi A3 TDI Clubsport ConceptAudi's shown us a Clubsport concept spun off the TT, but now it's time for the A3 to get some love--the diesel A3, that is.

This Audi A3 TDI Clubsport quattro concept starts with the 2.0-liter turbodiesel that's heading for U.S. customers in various Volkswagen and Audi models. In this form, it makes 224 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque, shooting the A3 to 60 mph in less than 6.6 seconds on its way to 149 mph. A six-speed transmission and quattro all-wheel drive handle the power.

Body mods transform the A3 into a Clubsport--there's a spoiler ripped from DTM cars, bolt-on wheel-arch extensions, and an interior shod with racing bucket seats and an open gear-lever gate, along with six-piston brakes and ceramic discs, a version of the programmable steering/shocks/throttle system offered on the 2009 Audi A4, and Audi's magnetic ride control.

The latest Clubsport doesn't have a chance at becoming reality, at least not in the U.S. where the A3 hatchback only comes with a gas engine. And as much as we'd like a shot at it, it's not in the cards--the concept will spend the end of May as a part of the 27th annual Lake Wörther Tour in Austria's Carinthia province (go past Salzburg; if you've hit Ljubljana, you've gone too far).

2008 Scion xDIsn't it about time Scion launched another of its home-brewed Release editions? Of course it is. And possibly inspired by the B-52s, the new Scion xD Release Series 1.0 gets a fabulous Hot Lava paint job to go with its added kit.

For $1,999 more than the base manual-gearbox Scion xD (priced now from $15,170), the xD RS 1.0 gets a body kit by DAMD, a rear spoiler, lower springs from Toyota Racing Development, and special wheel covers; inside there are seats with Hot Lava accents (ouch!), a RAZO shift knob, and more of the lava-colored trim all over the cockpit and dash.

Scion promises only to build 2,000 copies and will start selling them in dealerships this June. Meanwhile, please to enjoy the high-resolution pics--just click on 'em to expand your happiness and theirs.

2009 Ford Focus: Cleaned Up a Little

2009 Ford FocusBy now you've read our Bottom Line on the 2008 Ford Focus. It's a solid choice if you’re looking for a roomy car that handles well with a base price that starts around $15,000--but let's be honest, it's not the most attractive Ford two-door ever.

Ford's noticed too--so the 2009 Focus two-door is getting a quick refresher course in clean styling. Gone are the front fender vents, and a new front bumper's been styled. Ford says the front end picks up some cues from the new 2010 Ford Fiesta, which isn't a bad car to mimic, and that it's added fog lamps as standard gear on the two-door. The brightwork has been toned down, and a new high-mounted spoiler is added on Focus SES coupes, while the SE keeps its decklid spoiler.

2009 Ford FocusFocus SES coupes also get a tuned exhaust and a new final-drive ratio for their four-speed automatics, which should drop 0-60 mph times. The 2.0-liter four remains otherwise the same, and makes 143 hp with the five-speed manual, 140 hp with the automatic.A PZEV version turns in 130 hp and with the five-speed, gets 35 mpg.

Stability control is now available on the Focus two-door, and the SES versions get standard SYNC entertainment controllers.
