The 2008 Volkswagen Touareg diesel's a capable off-roader, and with its big V-10 diesel engine it pulls like a crack tractor. Now VW's planning a new diesel Touareg--this time, with a smaller oil-burner that will broaden its offerings in the U.S. market.

A new Volkswagen Touareg diesel SUV will be shown at the Los Angeles auto show this fall, with a version of VW's new corporate V-6 diesel under its hood. The 3.0-liter turbocharged diesel V-6 turns in 240 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque. VW says the engine accelerates the hefty Touareg to 60 mph in about 8.0 seconds and pushes it to a top speed of 133 mph (specs are likely to change for U.S. versions). Fuel economy in the European cycle ranges up to 25 mpg.

In Germany, the new diesel accounts for 80 percent of all Touareg sales. It's priced in Europe at about 50,000 euros, while the current V-10 diesel Touareg here in the States can retail for roughly the same amount ($77,000). It's expected the new V-6 diesel will start at a significantly lower base price when it goes on sale in America.
