2009 Dodge Challenger Gets Top Marks in Crash Testing

In NHTSA's crash testing regimen, the new 2009 Dodge Challenger earned 5-star ratings for both driver and front passenger protection in frontal crashes. It also earned top 5-star driver and rear-passenger ratings for side-impact protection.
The vehicle has the benefit of a stout platform--the previous-gen Mercedes E-Class--upon which its optional fire-breathing HEMI V-8 and Mercedes 5-speed (or optional 6-speed manual) are fitted to provide scorching acceleration. In addition to the solid platform, Chrysler fitted safety features that include advanced multi-stage front driver and passenger air bags, supplemental side-curtain airbags, and Electronic Stability Program with traction control and brake assist.
Dodge also employed passive safety features in the Challenger to ensure occupant protection such as pretensioning seatbelt retractors and supplemental side-curtain airbags. And of course, the Challenger's responsive steering, meaty rubber, confidence-inspiring handling, and plenty of power to squirt away from dangerous roadway situations are all features that help drivers avoid crumpled sheetmetal to begin with.--Colin Mathews

JKD - Yes, the Challenger is a 300/Charger platform with a wheelbase that has been shortened. Some details from previous-gen Merc E class are changed, but many are of the same design if not exactly from the same stampings. More is shared than just rear suspension design. And I think this instance of platform sharing is fantastic - otherwise, the 300/challenger/charger would have likely ended up with live rear axles instead of the excellent independent setup they use.

It's nice for Chrysler to finally include standard side airbags but... no standard ESP, TC, or even ABS on SEs which is a real shame.

That's interesting but is Challenger's platform any different than 300's or Charger's for example? My understanding was that they were very similar if not identical. If that's the case then they'd only share rear suspension setup with Merc and hardy anything else... unless they specifically changed/added more stuff in this case (?)
