Mercedes-Benz is in the midst of torture testing its retractable-glass-roofed 2009 SLK in the desert. One can only wonder if the engineers on board are being torture-tested as well in the extreme heat.We suspect that the camouflage on the SLK's rear quarters is there to accommodate test equipment needed to ensure the roof's ability to shield occupants from Death Valley's intense UV rays. Our first photos of the SLK with its top down reveal some strange solar panels set within the SLK's roll hoops. It's unclear if the panels are in place strictly for data gathering and testing purposes, or if they will be part of the finished product once the glass-topped SLK hits showrooms.--KGP Photography
