In a fairly serious recall that affects only 3,403 2009 Nissan Altimas, vehicles with the 16-inch aluminum alloy wheels could experience lug nut loosening. "If the lug nuts become loose, it could eventually result in a loss of control and a crash without warning," cautioned NHTSA, via Edmunds.
A manufacturing defect in the wheels seems to be at fault. Nissan will replace affected wheels with new ones manufactured to proper specs. Affected vehicles were manufactured at Nissan's Canton, Miss., plant from July 24 to August 14 of this year. Altima owners may contact Nissan at 800-647-7261 for more information and questions.
While vehicle recalls will begin "sometime this month," if we had a new Altima with 16s we'd probably just ground it for now. Or at least tighten the lug nuts every morning.--Colin Mathews
