2010 Honda HybridTheCarConnection.com's spies just caught Honda's hybrid-only model that's designed to take on the Toyota Prius. The shape and packaging of this prototype is clearly Prius-inspired, although the overall size looks larger than Toyota's hybrid favorite. The test group consisted of a Toyota Prius, Honda's face-lifted Civic Hybrid, and this prototype, which is sure to be considered the top of Honda's hybrid vehicle range.--KGP Photography

haha they are so busted. Bring on the Fit Hybrid.
Looks like they’ve made liberal use of their Homeland Security stockpile of duct tape. :-)

That looks like a carbon copy of the Prius. Come on guys, show some originality.

Why doesn’t Honda save themselves some R&D money, and just put the original Insight back into production?
Thanks for the photos.

Good golly, Miss Molly!

That car looks strikingly similar to — no, let’s say congruent with the
shape of the current Prius.

Maybe they should name it the HINDSIGHT… as in 20-20.

That’s funny. it’s like the chopped the front end off of a prius and a honda, swapped the two, and welded them back together. where’s the honda with a prius front end? lol.

Gary, the Insight was a two seater and sales numbers were small. I do hope Honda uses the Insight name though.

My bet is the new hybrid will look very much like the FCX Clarity hrydogen car.

Ok, seriously, I love the spy shots, but are we sure that this is a Honda? It looks like a Prius with a generic grill. I seriously hope that Honda takes a bit of originality with the upcoming Hybrid only car. The insight was a great Hybrid only, but too limited on space for most of the buying public.

Come on guys…..Honda said the car would resemble the FCX Clarity and it does. They will sell a ton.

They say..”Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery”…but, a COMPLETE knock-off!?!?! What the hell Honda?!? For a moment I thought those were false camo body panels made to imitate the Prius, but no, that’s actual sheet metal. Honda, you hafta stop hiring Toyota’s designers!!! First, the 2009 TL goes all Lexus GS on us, and now THIS!!! Don’t get me wrong, the 2009 TL looks great, but where’s the originality???

ACURA23CL

I wouldn’t be surprised if they used ACTUAL Prius body panels for this…LMAO…WTF!

The prius has worked great for Toyota, but copying its ugly shape so shamelessly will NOT work fro Honda.

They Still do NOT get it. Hybrid drivers pay aN ARM AND A LEG above similar non-hybrid cars and want to LOOK different as well, and at the time that Toyota is coming out with its THIRD generation Prius, Honda buyers sure WILL NO|T accept that their honda hybrid looks like Toyota’s OLD NEWS Prius II!

Get a grip, Honda!!!

I’m laughing so hard I had to close the door to my office.

What a joke! I don’t think honda has designers on staff just people that trace.

I have to agree with ‘paul gs’, I think it will more like the Clarity than anything.

honda should seriously consider a Fit Hybrid….I bet this new hybrid wiil cost more than 30K. We need affortable hybrids here, hybrids these days are just too expensive!

I agree with the often spoken (written?) consensus that the car looks too much like a Prius. But maybe that’s Honda’s intent? Manufacturers go to great lengths to disguise their cars.

However, the car seems to have been shot in Death Valley. Honda’s R&D center is near Mojave and it’s been my observation that Honda’s seldom roam on public roadways since they have such a big playground of their own. However, it gets far hotter in Death Valley then Mojave, so maybe they couldn’t resist trying out that newfangled hybrid AC system to the max …

Are you sure this isnt a Prius? Looks like a Prius!Look at the badge on the grille (covered in tape)-its round and last time I checked the Honda symbol was not quite square!

1 word - disappointed. The reason my wife and I bought the Civic Hybrid was looked good and Escape hybrid was for function (hauling large objects - the home depot runs). I saw spy photos earlier that were of the Honda Airwave rumored to be the next hybrid, which I was excited about, looked good, would be functional and have good mileage. I don’t want to see another Prius on the road.

The grille is exactly like the Clarity. The dash also appears to be like a Civic. It’s a double-decker with the speedo on top.

Give them time. I am sure it will look nothing like the Prius when production hits, although it does now. The only drawback of the Civic Hybrid (compared to the Prius) is the non-folding rear seat. This looks like a hatch, hopefully with folding rear seats.

just take the Clarity fuel cell car body as inspiration, Honda. That looks very nice, and much better than the Prius.

Man… I sure hope it resembles Clarity. I would buy it in an instance!!

Look closely at the pictures - that car has Dunlop tires. Dunlop provides OEM tires for Toyota. Every Honda I’ve ever owned came with Michelins from the factory. Sorry kids - but that’s a 2010 Prius.

This hybrid is inspired by the design of the FCX Clarity, which is a pure gem of aerodynamic design. I just read an article saying that Honda will use the Insight name for this and it should start with a base price under $18,500. The expected fuel economy is 50 - 70 mpg. The overall shape may have been inspired by the Prius, but is the result of pure wind tunnel testing. Remember the GM EV-1 electric car and the original Honda Insight? That basic shape is a must for the least amount of air resistance to achieve the best possible fuel economy. Any car designed to be a pure hybrid is sure to use a similar design for that reason. Honda will have a HUGE home run with this car if everything stays as expected with the starting price and the fuel economy numbers. Good job, Honda!
