Michigan Man Gets 53rd New Cadillac–In A Row

Joseph Macko isn't a casual fan of Cadillac--he may be the GM brand's most loyal long-lived customer.

The Flint Journal says the 84-year-old Macko has been driving Cadillacs since 1955. New Cadillacs. This week Macko brought home his 53rd new Caddy in a row--the latest one from a Michigan dealership that's sold him 22 cars in a row.

He used to buy new Cadillacs, but now Macko leases them, and this year's lease is a 2009 Cadillac DTS--in black. He likes the cars, he says, because of their quality.

And why a new car every year? "You only live one time. Money is to spend," Macko told the paper. "I spend it once I get it."

He was only 29 years old when he purchased his first Cadlillac. In the 1950s to mid 1960s, a Cadillac really meant something and you really had to have a good income to afford it - well before the easy and lengthy loan terms typical of today. Too bad the article did not state what he did for GM. He still has the same mindset back when he was young. I too still remember when each year’s new Cadillac has substantial body changes until 1975, then it became minor grille and tail lamps difference, and now there are no changes for 6-7 years until the next generation. To me, there is no sense trading in a DTS yearly now unless getting another model. I still have my 2006 DTS, which will the identical to the 2009.

He’s loyal to gm cause he didn’t suffer with model x (Pontiac phoenix) of the early 80’s !

He had to get a new one each year to keep the reliability claim However, Cadillacs are quite dependable these days, so no reason not to keep your DTS for another four years… BTW, Warren Buffett just go himself a new DTS the other day.

He and I are cancelling each other out! I bought a Shelby Mustang in ‘66 and a Honda Accord in ‘88. I still own and drive them both! They look good and drive good, why bother to buy sometrhing else?!?!?!

Jerry E-how’s that Shelby’s gas mileage treating ya? My first car was a 1965 Ford Mustang, and, reliable it was not, but fun to look at and it was usually fun to drive, too. 3-speed tranny with the 200 c.i. 6 cyl motor, the car ran pretty well. It’s that body style, and that of the Shelby’s, that is so enduring classic to me. This guy with the Cadillac’s, tell ya what, if it makes the guy happy, so be it. I could think of worse rigs to spend your money on.

Utterly and unnecessarily wasteful. Most of the models he bought had only very minor variations from the prior-year models. Unless he put 100,000 miles in each one each year, it makes zero sense. But even if put 100k miles a year on a car, I’d keep it at least 5 years! When i donated my accord to charity it was 18 (1990)!

Jerry E - The only reason I’d replace your Accord (assuming it’s your daily driver) is safety. Better structure, airbags, curtains, ABS protect you from other crazy people while traction and stability control let you test new limits of 200+ hp engines
