2009 Acura RLMaybe it's the multitude of airbags and electronic stuff--or maybe the proud new bow up front gives it the extra oomph in crash tests. Whatever the reason, the 2009 Acura RL luxury sedan is the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's newest Top Safety Pick.

The institute--funded by the insurance industry, and tougher on cars in its crash tests than the federal National Highway Traffic Safety Administration--says the new Acura RL has superior crash protection as well as standard stability control, making it a natural selection for the IIHS' top honor.

Among the improvements that vaulted the new RL into the ranks of the safety elite are better rear crash performance (up from marginal to good), and an array of safety equipment including forward collision warning and adaptive headlights.

"Criteria to win are tough because TOP SAFETY PICK is intended to drive continued improvements such as good crash test ratings and rapid addition of electronic stability control, which is standard equipment on the RL," says Institute president Adrian Lund. "Recognizing vehicles at the head of the class for safety helps consumers distinguish the best overall choices without having to sort through multiple test results."

Honda has nine vehicles on the IIHS' top safety list; Acura has put four vehicles on the list.

2009 Acura TLWhile journos flog the new 2009 Acura TL this week, the brand's managers are giving us something else to think about, other than the TL's brazen new look.

Acura tells Automotive News this morning that it's about to add a new nameplate to its lineup, as it tries to step up its game to become a "tier one luxury brand," the weekly industry standard says.

The new Acura's going to be completely new, says VP Dan Bonawitz, and it'll be the company's first since the RDX crossover joined the lineup two years ago. The News says the new car will arrive before a new NSX sportscar shows up in 2010, but it's not clear if Acura officials confirmed the NSX or if that date is still speculation.

The News says the new car could be a coupe/convertible that plays in the $50,000 price segment, which makes a new NSX sound a whole lot less likely. We'll stay on it until we know everything, right down to the shoe size.

2009 Acura TLYou've been waiting for the first photo of the 2009 Acura TL--well, here you are.

While most of the world is all in a dither about the new iPhone, Acura says its new TL is way cooler. It's obvious, no? The TL gets a more hunkered-down shape than in its last version, with a thick grille and pronounced fender humps that would make Fergie proud.

Acura also promises a fab interior, along with two versions--one with front-wheel drive, we assume, and one with Acura's Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SHAW-D, for rap guys). They promise a new high in driving experience, which we're assuming means 300 horsepower pumped through the AWD version.

We'll bring you the full story on the new TL pretty soon. Meanwhile, tell us what you think of the new look in a comment below.

2010 Acura NSXAre these the first shots of the Acura NSX?

The new supercar, often rumored and much delayed, has been in turnaround since Honda styled concepts that met with a thud at major auto shows. Now, this prototype seems to wear typically Honda lines and possibly even an Acura badge on the nose. Does it look to you like the 2007 Acura Advanced Coupe Concept from the 2007 Detroit auto show?

If it is the new Acura NSX, it has a tough life ahead of it--it has to do battle with the Nissan GT-R and the coming 200-mph Lexus LF-H.

We'll keep you updated as we get more information on these pictures.

The new 2009 Acura TSX goes on sale at the end of the month, and Honda's upscale brand and its upscale managers have tagged it with a price of $28,960, not including destination charges of $715.

That's for the base manual-transmission version. Acura says the TSX with the Technology Package and manual transmission will go for $32,060, plus the destination charges. The five-speed automatic transmission? Yours for no additional charge.

Though the TSX's price has gone up a little more than 4 percent, Acura says it's a strong value because of its improved power, performance and safety features. The TSX has grown for the 2009 model year, 3.0 inches wider and 2.4 inches longer. Its four-cylinder engine is slightly less powerful at 201 hp, but it develops more torque.

There's standard leather seating, Bluetooth, XM satellite radio and USB connectivity. The 2009 Acura TSX also offers a rearview camera, a navigation system and DVD-Audio as options.
