For those of you who might never get the chance to drive a new
Porsche 911, there's an ersatz experience available now online.
Porsche Cars North America (PCNA) says with its latest refresh, it's enabled visitors to
their site to draw their own roads and then "drive" on the virtual asphalt they've created.
Like lots of other manufacturer sites, Porsche's own Web home now lets oglers re-skin a car in all of its optional colors and view it from all angles in a 360-degree spin, so that those fantasies can take on a Technicolor hue.
The next stop in that fantasy is an immersive experience that turns the user's cursor into a wax pen that enables drawing of a three-dimensional road course on the page. When the new track is "saved," a fully-rendered silver 911 "drives" the course that's been created.
It's not as exciting as some online experiences we've had, but that's none of your business. While you diddle around on their site, check out our full reviews of the whole
Porsche lineup, including the
911, Boxster and
Cayman sports cars.

The 2010
Porsche Panamera has finally dropped some of its disguise, giving us a better look at some of the true styling nuances destined for the radical new
Porsche.
For the first time we can see the proper hood sculpting and an almost completely clean look at the character development on the Panamera's side panels--including the fender vent just aft of the front wheel. A little cladding still remains on the front bumper, on the rear flanks below the taillights, and on the taillights themselves. Some minor tape effects also remain, but do nothing to obscure the car's shape. Other than that, this Panamera prototype looks to be running around naked, finally embracing its birthday suit.
The Panamera will have a choice of three front-mounted engines when it finally bows. The entry-level powerplant will be a VW six-cylinder with more than 300 hp. Porsche's own V-8s with 350 hp and 560 hp are expected, the latter with twin turbos.
There will also be a
hybrid version, which will share its gas-electric running gear with the Cayenne
Hybrid, which was introduced at the 2007
Los Angeles auto show.
Porsche promises a 30 percent boost in fuel economy with the
hybrid technology. To achieve better weight balance, the Panamera
Hybrid will stow its battery under the cargo floor, and the clutch and electric motor will live between the engine and transmission. And to keep efficiency high, the
hybrid will be able to run in gas-only, electric-only, or in combined gas-electric mode.
When it hits the road in 2009,
Porsche plans to sell 20,000 Panameras annually, which could push it over the company-wide number of 100,000 cars per year.
We expect the Panamera to make its world debut at the 2009
Geneva motor show.

Porsche senses the tide turning against big SUVs--and it's rushing a greener Cayenne to market, according to a
blog by Britain's Autocar.
Autocar reports the Stuttgart sportscar maker and latter-day SUV adopter is planning a lighter, more efficient Cayenne for market sometime after 2011. The Cayenne cousin, the
Volkswagen Touareg, is being replaced in late 2010 or 2011, they report, and
Porsche boss Wendelin Wiedeking is using his substantial influence at VW to make sure the replacement vehicles are lighter and cheaper to build.
The more compact new SUV has been seen by spy photographers and has been apparently mislabeled as a smaller-than-Cayenne SUV.
Porsche has said the next Cayenne will offer both diesel and
hybrid powertrains, possibly derived from Audi's new 3.0-liter V-6 turbodiesel. The
hybrid powertrain bows first in the
Porsche Panamera sedan in 2010, and could give that vehicle 30-mpg fuel economy.

Porsche confirms this morning that the new
Cayman S Sport arrives in showrooms in October and will wear a price tag of $69,900.
The new Sport edition of the
Cayman delivers 8 hp more to the 3.4-liter flat six, for a total of 303 hp. It also gets a cosmetic kit that gives it a passing resemblance to the 911 GT3, with
green or orange paint, black rims and exterior mirrors, black grilles, and a black interior. "
Cayman S" is splashed down the sides, and
Porsche Active Suspension Management is standard, along with 19-inch wheels, xenon headlamps, the Sport Chrono package, new seats and some Alcantara trim inside. It'll also be offered in black, red, yellow, white, and silver, in case you have any intention of reselling it someday.
Only about 100 of the
Cayman S Sports will come to the U.S., along with 50 roadsters. The latter is a special Boxster with white paint and white finish on its wheels, air intakes, center console, and instruments.

Andreas sends us spy shots of cars and
trucks, but this time he's uncovered a very special lawn tractor that probably doesn't have a place in the
Porsche museum--though it wears the livery of
Porsche's iconic 911.
The crazy lawn tractor here started life as a Partner machine, with 14.5 horsepower and a hydrostatic transmission. A buddy of our spy shooter took the tractor apart completely, and then got obsessed. Every nut and bolt was painted yellow; a new stainless-steel exhaust was fabricated; and a rev counter made from an old 911 oil filter was installed, along with a fire extinguisher.
After putting it all back together, the proud Porschephile shot it all with classic Grand-Prix Weiss (white) with Indischrot (red) details and wheels. Undoubtedly, it's more fun to work in the garden than on a track--but who knows? Maybe we'll see this one in the U.S. Lawnmower Championships one day.
