Could it be--after a decade of living with the
current Saab 9-5, is GM ready to commit to a new range-topper from Trollhattan?
Motor Authority reports today that this sketch of a future
Saab was snapped at a
Saab owners' convention. The styling theme's far more adventurous than today's car, which technically dates back to 1999 but shares elements with the
Saab 9-5 that emerged in the early 1980s. (Remember, it was part of a four-company team: Saab's 9000, the Lancia Thema, Fiat Croma and Alfa Romeo 164.) The drawing also hints that the big
Saab will move to a five-door body style with lots of Aero X-inspired themes.
As for powertrains, the Web site speculates that Saab's current Cross Wheel Drive system and a turbocharged V-6 engine are likely candidates for the new vehicle.
There's no word on when a new
Saab 9-5 might make its first appearance, but the Geneva show of next year could provide some clues. We'll keep you posted.

TheCarConnection.com's spies have caught the latest pics of the 2010
Saab 9-4X undergoing testing before a likely debut at the 2009
Detroit Auto Show in January.
The prototype shown here is said to have a V-6 engine with about 284 horsepower and an automatic gearbox. It's most likely
Saab's current turbocharged 2.8-liter V-6. Sized beneath GM's current large crossovers, the 9-4X is imagined as a natural competitor for the
BMW X3,
Audi Q5, and
Acura RDX.
The
Saab shares its platform with the new
Cadillac BRX, but this
Saab prototype shows some distinctive touches from the
Cadillac mules running around Michigan. The A-pillar has a more raked angle, and it's blacked out; the roofline, too, gives a good indication of this car's
Saab design cues, as does the grille opening seen through the camouflage.
We'll have more details on the new 2010
Saab 9-4X as they're released.

Saab's Turbo X has arrived, and for the customers who ordered an all-black version of the first all-wheel-driven 9-3 earlier this year, it's time to go to school.
To commemorate the arrival of the sedan- and wagon-bodied Turbo X,
Saab says it's hosting a Driving Academy at Road Atlanta this week. The two-day course is being held for Turbo X buyers who ordered their new cars before February, when the limited edition first was announced.
If you didn't qualify for the driving school--where it's a balmy 93 degrees this week--you might still be able to snag one of the 600 copies of the Turbo X headed here for the 2008 model year. The Sport Sedan is priced from $42,510 and the SportCombi is priced from $43,310.
The Turbo X cars, which we first showed you in our coverage from last year's
Frankfurt auto show, sport
Saab's first all-wheel-drive system, called Cross Wheel Drive; special 18-inch wheels; black paint and black interior trim; and specially tuned brakes, suspension, and steering. The Turbo X also sports a 280-horsepower version of
Saab's 2.8-liter turbocharged V-6 engine, and a choice of six-speed manual and automatic gearboxes.

These are the first true pictures of the 2010
Saab 9-4X crossover vehicle, just captured by our spy photographers undergoing track testing.
We first saw this body style at the
Detroit Auto Show, being touted at as the 9-4X BioPower Concept, but
Saab is obviously serious about bringing this to the marketplace in a timely fashion.
Codenamed GMT168, the
Saab 9-4X will arrive in time for the 2010 model year. Sharing the platform with the upcoming
Cadillac BRX, the
Saab 9-4X will be built in at the Ramos Arizpe plant in Mexico. And unlike the larger 9-7X sport-utility vehicle, this will be sold globally.
Styling – as you can easily see underneath quite a lot of automotive lingerie -- will be very close to that of the concept, and powerplants will include a range of gasoline, as well as a new 250-horsepower diesel. The 9-4X will also offer Saab’s XWD all-wheel-drive system.--

Think Project Runway meets the X-Games, and you have the basics for
Saab's new line of clothing, conveniently introduced this week along with
Saab's 9-X BioHybrid concept at the
New York auto show.
The Pure BioPower Eco Clothing Collection clothing line,
Saab says, combines "form and function with responsible performance." What, no rouching? It's been designed in a partnership with a Swedish company, Reflective Circle (sample photo here, sample sale...we're not sure). The clothes are made from 100 percent ecologically grown organic cotton, and all the dyeing, printing and washing is done in the most
green way possible,
Saab says. Buttons are made out of Coroso nuts. The whole line will be up for sale in May at
Saab's Web boutique.
Along with the clothing lineup,
Saab USA is also kicking in $40,000 for the Earth Pledge FutureFashion Initiative, which is helping coutoure go more
green.
As for the BioHybrid concept? Well, you saw it in our
Geneva show coverage, but tonight it will get its North American debut--and we'll be able to see more of the clothes. Stay with us this week as we bring you more on the
Saab 9-X BioHybrid, the BioPower clothing line, and more on how long it takes to cab crosstown when there's no parade of
green running up Fifth Avenue like yesterday.
