AMG engineers have begun hot-weather tests of a production-spec prototype of the 2010
Mercedes-Benz SLC gullwing supercar in the California desert.
It was just over a year ago that the Dodge-Viper-bodied mule made its world debut in California canyon country, and now the real thing has shown up, like clockwork. When all the camouflage is removed, the gullwinged SLC should be a striking follow-up to the colder and more clinical
SLR McLaren. One thing we can attest to is the SLC's sound, which is positively beastly when driven in anger.
There's no word yet on the powerplants, but it's likely the new SLC will bow a year from now at the 2009
Frankfurt auto show.--

Even now, in spy-shot form, the 2010
Mercury Milan is taking a backseat to the
Ford Fusion. But
Ford is at least trying to give the next Milan a bit more distance from its big-selling Blue Oval-badged cousin.
The 2010
Mercury Milan shows off its new grille in these new spy shots.
Ford says the new Milan will go on sale early next year, and in four-cylinder form, it will get better fuel economy than similar
Toyota Camrys and
Honda Accords. In the 2010 model year, the
Mercury Milan Hybrid will sport better fuel economy than the
Toyota Camry Hybrid.
These new spy shots show a more rounded-off
Mercury grille, with what looks to be a larger logo affixed to the center of the grille. Headlamps wrap into the hood, but the side view looks pretty similar to today's car, suggesting this is more of a mid-cycle freshening than a full revamp.

We've shown you spy photos of the
2010 Ford Fusion earlier this year, but today, TheCarConnection.com's spy photographers got even closer to the final version of the sedan that's coming soon from Dearborn.
The look of the
2010 Ford Fusion is quite different from the current car. The grille appears deeper and more elegant than in the current car. The grille dips down into the front bumper, while the outer edges of the bumper slant upward as they reach the side of the car. The silhouette, though, doesn't appear to have changed much from the current car, suggesting that the Fusion and the new
Mazda6 may be diverging on the road to sales success. More character lines on the front fenders and a revised tail suggest that this is something less than a complete renovation, as is also the case with the
Mazda6.
The big news with the new version of the Fusion will undoubtedly be the new
Ford Fusion Hybrid coming in the 2009 calendar year. Likely related to the four-cylinder
hybrid powertrain in the
Ford Escape, the
Ford Fusion hybrid will have better fuel economy than the
Toyota Camry Hybrid, according to a recent promise by
Ford.

These are the first real photos of the open-air twin to the
2008 Audi R8.
The
Audi R8 Spider is due next year as a 2010 model. Engines will be the same as the R8, and the Spider will also get a version of the V-10 that's also coming to the R8 coupe.
The roof looks pretty much like that on the
Lamborghini Gallardo Spider, and without the sideblades that normally are found on the R8 Coupe, the Spider looks even better.
Stay tuned for more info from TheCarConnection.com.

It took a long-range spotting scope to get it, but we just caught the 2010
Cadillac CTS coupe without its heavy camouflage covering. Now all that separates from the production styling of the CTS coupe is some checkerboard tape--and about a half-mile of distance between the camera and the prototype. The taped camouflage, long distance, and slightly foggy conditions all conspired to keep some of the CTS coupe's finer styling details obfuscated, but the overall design treatment is clearly revealed.
In its uncovered state, the production CTS coupe still remains faithful to the original concept, but some minor changes are visible on the prototype's rear-end. The mesh vents which flank the central exhaust on the concept have been replaced with slim red reflectors, in a nod to safety standards on the production model. Also, the concept's license plate housing has been reshaped (perhaps to accommodate both U.S. and international registration plates), while a larger chrome strip adorns the trunk lid. The overall shape to the prototype's rear bumper looks nearly identical to the concept, right down to the careful sculpting at the bottom corners which wrap around toward the central exhaust.
The side window lines look just about identical on both cars, while the truly B-pillar-free design on the concept is less exotic on the production car. Stylists appear to have done an admirable job keep a smooth glass-to-glass effect on the side windows, but a B-pillar is still in place. The front-end on this prototype looks to be straight off the CTS sedan, without the subtle body kit applied to the concept's front fascia.
With our appetite whetted upon seeing this unclad CTS coupe prototype, we're now eager to get a closer look at a similarly finished prototype running on public roads. As always, we'll keep our eyes open.--
