Volkswagen says it's passed Ford Motor Company to become the world's third-largest automaker. The Volkswagen Group--which includes Audi, SEAT, Skoda, Bugatti, Lamborghini and Bentley--delivered 3.31 million vehicles in the first half of 2008. VW says Ford's reported first-half sales of 3.22 million vehicles worldwide, putting the German automaker ahead of the American company.
"This shows that we are on the right track with our ever-stronger international presence and, above all, our product program," said VW chairman Martin Winterkorn.
General Motors and Toyota are locked in a battle to determine which will be the world's largest automaker in 2008. GM is still in the process of cutting production and closing factories in North America--but the economic stall in the U.S. has also led Toyota to announce production cuts.

August 29th, 2008 - 12:45 pmI am not surprised by this as VW is very popular in Europe. Also, VW and Audi have the very best interior design for their price point. VW and Audi have very tasteful exteriors too. A VW Jetta’s interior put shame on the Ford Focus and Fusion. Whereas, Ford cars in the US have very ugly designs on the whole. Witness the entire Mercury line with its over-styled and unbalanced add-ons just to look slightly different from Fords. It is very unbelievable how mismanaged Ford is in the US compared to the entire Ford car, SUV, and passenger van lines in the UK.

September 1st, 2008 - 5:55 amI am not surprised either. Despite its dismal reliability in its Mex-built US models, VW offers soem amazingly fuel efficient and real performing Golfs and other cars in Europe. The sixth gen Golf with 122 HP from a 1.2 lt wengine (!!!) and esp. the TDI (smallest of two diesels) makes an amazing 4.5 lt/100 km combined! (that’s approx. 1.2 gallons/60 miles!)
