General alert to companies in the throes of downsizing: before you go sending out backslapping certificates to longstanding employees, make sure they’re still with the company. The Detroit News says that a big oops was made recently when the Blue Oval sent Michael Stawasz, 49, a piece of paper congratulating his 30 years of service with the company. The problem? The transmission engineering technician had been canned about nine months prior as Ford slashed its workforce, shortly before becoming eligible to retire with full benefits. Stawasz, who is fighting his dismissal with an age discrimination lawsuit, called the certificate a “slap in the face.” Now, we’ve been slapped a lot, and this…well, it’s pretty much a slap in the face.
