Which Concept Cars Should Be Built?
Which Concept Cars Should Be Built?Over at the main site, we're talking about concept cars. Rex Roy chose ten from the remote and near past that for whatever reason, weren't built. Chrysler's Norsemen never even made it to an auto show, while the bastardized Pontiac Aztek we did finally get was so far from the concept design as to be a totally different car. We've chosen our ten - now tell us the ones we missed in the comments section below, and we'll cobble together a reader's version of the list for you.

All these cars are nice and all, but a bit big and not going to sell in large numbers. I liked the Ford 021c. Small, cute with a cool retro styling.
The Jag F-type was a bit bland, but was exactly what Jaguar needed. Instead we got the X-type.

I think the Ford Intecepter should be built with a couple of caveats: include a two door coupe and a convertible.
The Dodge Demon looks interesting, build it!!!

Neither Chrysler nor Cadillac managers can look in the mirror and, with a straight face tell themselves their copncept cars ( Phaeton, 16) are worth $120K. Why not? Their engineers designed it, they can build it, there is a niche for halo cars and good ones don't come along every decade. Detroit management needs to think backwards: am I offering a car that will get people out of their Mercedes? The answer has always been NO, but it doesn't have to be.

Really, how you could include the Norseman which was strictly an idea car that was as impractical for immediate production as almost any concept that ever came out of GM over the Chrysler Falcon sports car which all of autodom continues to rave over and comment that it would have been an incredible success perhaps beyond those of Thunderbird and Corvette for Ford and GM is inexcusable.

the chev SS from a few years back is one of my recent favorites. I'd have bought one.
Tight, clean, with lots of curves; a shorter version would have made a much better Camaro than the one headed for production.
very sexy
I also really liked the 99 Nomad; instead we got the Astek. What were they thinking?

How long will it be before Ford finally gets their heads out? They should deliver on smaller autos, cut back on those giant trucks. They have the engineers to do it so put them to work, don't think the Continental is the route to go.

I hope Lincoln puts the stunning MKR into production SOON and gives its design cues to their line up.

The 4-door 1997 Jeep Wrangler Dakar - just look how well the 4-door Wrangler Unlimited has been selling. The Gladiator and Rescue should have been built as well. Instead, we got crap like the Compass and Patriot and Commander.

The ford Interceptor is total balls out AMERICAN style. American cars potray strength. Foreign cars portray little sissy don't know any better type people. JohnK.

I really think Chevy's Bel Air concept of 5-7 years ago would have been a winner. Even though the show car was a convertible, its styling cues easily would have worked as a full line offering (remember the old days with sedans, wagons, coupes and convertibles with shared model names and styling?). It would have brought GM's family sedan sales back from the dead ( a market it once ruled), and back from the fleet market as well.
Instead, we got the Malibu Maxx and "Impala"...
