What's a Real Gay Car? The New York Times Postulates

What makes a gay car? Other than being parked in TheCarConnection.com's SE HQ driveway, a car becomes gay (unlike people, who're born that way) when it acquires a gaggle of fans in the rainbow community.

It's taken the grey lady, the New York Times, just 38 or so years to realize there are "gay cars" in the world. This morning, they've canvassed the world of gay car writers and engineers in a quest for the skinny on the prime players - MINI, Miata and Beetle, Wrangler--along with the stalwart lesbian vehicle of choice, the Subaru Outback.

In the process of outing cars, the Times invus two of our favorite homosexualists, who point out that even in the gay world, gay cars sometimes carry a stigma. Joe LaMuraglia, Gaywheels.com titan, told his partner he wanted to buy a MINI--and his partner reminded him that in gay ghettos around the country, a MINI is pretty much "a gay cliché.”

Markus, who tech-directs the newly sheeny Motor Trend, debunks the clichés of a guy in Jeep “to show off his hot body,” and offers instead that “If you could actually push a button and see what every gay person drives, it’s probably not too different from what the average person drives, but it might skew higher in price.” To that point, one of Gaywheels.com's most popular searches is not the fabulous New Beetle or the very, very gay Wrangler - it's the Toyota Yaris.

What's totally gay to you, in the best possible sense? Tell us. Maybe we'll buy one next when we trade in the exceedingly versatile Element. Keep your comments "nice," in the non-Imus sense.

Gay cars? Hmmmm? Let me think about that for a minute. Car on car sex? Is that like when a GMC Suburban (butch) rams a Mini Cooper (fem) and out pops the new Mini Traveller concept? Nah can't be. OK OK so it must be a car that appeals to someone who "dates" within the same sex. Kewl, I can dig that. Let me do an impromptu pole (hehehe) of my gay friends, what do they drive? One has a Subaru WRX Wagon (5 speed of course), older Honda Prelude (supped up rice rocket), Mitsubishi Galant (daily driver), a Chevy Silverado pickup, last but not least a friend with both a 72' Bavaria (show car) and a 73' BMW Bavaria (driver) both 4 speeds. What do we learn from this little pole? (hehehe) There's no such thing as a gay car, only gays that drive cars ... and they drive whatever their little F**K they want. Okayyyyy!

P.S. - A butch gay guy or gal wouldn't be caught dead in a Mini anything. Do it big or not at all!

Defineitly the Audi TT and if they are rich + gay Lambo's
The Nissan 350Z seems borderline at the moment but Toyota Celica's are in there.
I'm told Italians & Gays buy Alfa Romeos-don't know how you tell them apart tho'

As a gay guy in San Diego - I'd like to break all the sterotypes. Here's what I've owned in the past 3 years... Dodge Viper SRT-10, Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT-8, MB CLS 500, Chevrolet Corvetter Convertible --- So much for stereotypes ;-)

Once again, we male lesbians are ignored. My partner and I have a Subaru Outback (a salvage rebuild bought on eBay, cheap cheap CHEAP! and otherwise fine). We're shunned by all those gay men driving their VW Cabrios, Miatas, and Saab converts; we're ignored by the pairs of women going spelunking with their children. Sniff. Doubly damned ....

Hmmm, gay cars is interesting but with I think about all of this is who is advertising in the gay rags & mags. Volvo, Saab, Mini, VW, and Subura. So what pops up on our radar, vehicles made by those manufactures.

As for myself and my partner, we've owned alot of vehicles. Myself have had a Chevy Spectrum (college yrs), then a Pontiac Grand Am, Pontiac Grand Prix, VW Jetta, Saab 9-3, Honda CR-V (company car), Infiniti FX35, Saturn Vue, and now a MB C280 4matic. My partner has had a Toyota Supra, 2 Chevy S-10 pickups, GMC Sonoma 4x4, and now has a MB SLK and a 72 Buick Skylark convertible.

We pick them for the style, handling, interior layout and utility. Since we're finished with remodeling our home, we no longer need a truck/suv. So it's back to cars for us; or until the next project rolls around.

My lesiban car decision was as follows: Women are still paid less than men in many professions and lesbians statistically have a lower annual income than gay men. Stereotypically we are usually more "eco-conscious" than the average person. I wanted something that was small enough to be gas friendly but still able to get up and move when I need it. In the Deep South we, lesbian car buyers, are grabbing up the Toyota Prius and the Honda Civic like they're 2 for 1 organic granola bars at Whole Foods. : )

All the obvious "gay" cars are mostly linked to a fairly specific group of people - affluent, city-dwelling, white men. That is why you see Volvo, Saab, Mini, and VW advertising in the gay press. However, not every gay person is an affluent, city dwelling white man (thank god!) That might be why as suburban gay guys we have a Ford Explorer for hauling dog, potting soil, etc, and a Saturn sedan.

Ummm, in America anything with the slightest hint of "design" is considered gay, isn't it? If it's an ugly lump and looks like it was designed by someone who has never seen the inside of a museum, then it's considered okay for straight people to buy it. Too bad for us. European straight guys don't seem to be so bothered by art.
I'm a lesbian and we have a Beetle 1.8T, a MINI Cooper S and a Miata R Package -- not a Subaru in sight. But I guess that's because I wear lipstick (when I'm not in the garage).

Thanks for the article. Thanks for not sterotyping us also. I am a gay car guy and an engineer that has been reading car mags for 35 years and this is the first acknowledgement that we are out here. Gay cars are totally subjective. My fun car is an '03 MR2 Spyder so obviously I'm not compensating for anything. My partner of 21 years and I both drive 4Runners. I do think the 4Runner Sport is a lesbian vehicle. I think they like the hood scoops. Also, the Suzuki Samari was the gayest vehicle I have seen in Atlanta in the 22 years I have lived here.

I am gay and been in the car business for over twenty years. Vehicle purchase decisions are made based on many factors. Weather you are gay or straight really does not matter in that decision. If one chooses a vehicle for its utility, it will be useful to whoever uses it. If one chooses a car to appear more attractive or desirable, then, that greater appeal will be there for anyone, straight or gay. My partner and I have been together for nearly thirty years and have seen a lot of changes in society toward the gay population, most of them good. Black, White, Straight, Gay…we are all different, yet equal. Car choice is a personal, individual thing that has more to do with finances, needs, desires and taste rather than sexual preference.
