Audi RS6: Cold Hands, Warm Heart?

To go up against Mercedes' E63 AMG and BMW’s M5, Audi is planning to offer the hot RS6. We caught it here, in northern Sweden, while it was undergoing some late prototype testing in the frigid Arctic.

The larger air intakes in the front bumper, and the wider fenders and diffuser at the rear, are the key clues as to the true identity of this Audi. And while the S models have four round exhaust pipes, the RS models will receive oval pipes as their distinguishing feature.

We caught the sedan version this week, but the new RS6 will also be available a wagon (which has already been introduced). They’ll be powered by the same V-10 engine as the S6, but with some help from a turbo, all together delivering about 580 horsepower. This Audi will give the M5 and E63 AMG some strong competition, we believe.--Brenda Priddy & Company

    Confused here - "RS" thought it meant a station wagon/estate/avant? Your pics are of a sedan - that would be designated "S6" --- have things changed with Audi?

    RS is said to designate a Renn Sport (translate Race Sport -source=Edmunds.com) model from Audi's Quattro GmbH division. These cars are low-production and are considered to be a step beyond the already sporty S-series. RS models have been produced in both sedan and avant forms. For example, the 2003 model year RS6 was produced in both forms, however, the avant was not exported to the US in appreciable numbers.
