Mercedes-Benz hasn't sold a car with a four-cylinder engine in the U.S. for the past few years, but they're taking this sesquicentennial anniversary of the birth of Rudolf Diesel to introduce a new oil-burner engine.
The new diesel, Mercedes says, outstrips all its previous efforts in design, technology and output. A 2.1-liter four-cylinder, the new diesel turns in 204 horsepower and 368 pound-feet of torque, a boost of 25 percent over its current diesel. Though it has more power, Mercedes says the new engine gets better fuel economy and also spits out less carbon dioxide -- 13 percent, according to their estimates.
The 2.1-liter version should be followed by smaller-displacement versions.
We think it's about time for Mercedes to bring back four-cylinders to the States -- this one in particular, and in the C-Class in specific. Would you buy a four-cylinder with a three-pointed star? Because it's a diesel, or despite the fact? Talk to us the best way you know how -- in a comment below. I'd buy a Diesel-powered C-Class in a minute. I had a '98 C230, which had a non-Kompressor four cylinder gas engine and got terrific mileage. The new C-Class' ethanol-friendly V6 engine doesn't get satisfactory mileage on either E85 or gasoline.

From what I read on another site, Mercedes expects that this engine will get 40+ mpg and pull 0-60 in under 8 seconds in a C class. I think that most people would be willing to live with those kind of specs, kind of like having your cake and eating it too.

Diesel's are a thing of the past, hybrids and alternate fuel is the wave of the future. It makes little sense to buy a diesel when you can buy a gas powered vehicle that achieves the same miles per gallon and gas is cheaper. Diesel is an idea that sounds better than it is in the real world. If you need diesel fuel and you are in a rural setting, it's not always easy to find a station that carries diesel. Traveling across the country can be a problem if you unexpectedly need diesel fuel.

I have an E280CDI (Australia ) . I wouldnt buy anything else but a diesel .You only have to drive a new Mercedes diesel to be converted from petrol. Good luck in the States with the new 4 cylinder.

My 06 E320 CDI gets 30-32 mpg combined. My son's 06 Jetta TDI gets 60 mpg on the highway, with cruise control on 65-- no kidding: I saw it with my own eyes, driving the car from Dallas to Houston last winter. In the summer, A/C on, it'll still get 54+ mpg on the highway. I look forward to more diesel technology, and increased production/lower cost of low-sulfer diesel.

This fantastic engine, with over 200 HP and 368 LbFt, can easily power not just the C class, but the E, the S, and even the M and GL class fatass SUVs.
A colleague here bought the 300 SEL back in 1990, that thing cost 60k (good $, 1990 $ and not 2008$) and had an I-6 gas engine that made a laughable 177 HP and 188 Lbft! (He still has it, in good shape, with less than 100k miles)

Consumer reports did a test with the smaller, lighter golf diesel some years ago and got 55 mpg highway, but they might have set the cruise at less than 65. 60 with 65 MPH is a bit high, maybe the tires were overinflated and/or the road was slightly sloping? and in winter, you may not use A/C, but you burn more gas to go thru the thicker (due to the lower temp) air.
