BMW is in the midst of its final testing for the U.S.-spec 335d--the first diesel-powered Bimmer to be sold in North America. The introduction of the 335d will coincide with the launch of face-lifted sheetmetal destined for the entire 3-Series lineup.

Due to emission restrictions, the U.S. version of the 335d will reportedly be down on power from its European cousin (265 horsepower and 425 pound-feet of torque vs. 282 hp and 428 pound-feet), but even our U.S. numbers--especially the fat torque number--promise terrific performance that may well be enough convince people to make the move to diesel.

As with the 335i gasoline engine, BMW will use two turbochargers: a small, low-pressure turbo to aid low-end acceleration and a more potent turbo to help at higher engine speeds. Acceleration for the 335d is expected be around 6.2 seconds to 60, while fuel consumption will likely yield 23 mpg city and 33 mpg highway.

BMW's new diesel range is expected to launch under the banner: BMW Advance Diesel with BluePerformance (Blue denotes the use of AdBlue--the aqueous urea solution used to reduce the diesel's nitrogen oxide emissions). The 335d is expected to bow this fall.--KGP Photography

    Can someone explain further the use of this "Adblue" urea solution? Is the owner going to have to refill this solution after X number of fill-ups? If so, I'm not sure that part of this new diesel technology will be received well by the public.

    WS, the Adblue urea stuff is only good for X number of miles. If I am not mistaken the Urea solution that Mercedes uses is good for 15,000 miles (I could be wrong on the exact number) and the solution will have to be drained and refilled at a scheduled maintenance interval (along with the oil change).

    That gas mileage is little better than a gas powered counterpart. Thanks, Congress, for making our lives more expensive through idiotic emissions targets which are causing diesel engines to burn more fuel every year.

    The 335de is a performaqnce diesel with the same copnsumption as a gas |(bot NON_perfoemance) cheapo base 3 series model.
    BMW should add to its diesel fleet the ECONOMY diesels, that have the same performance as the cheapo gas 3 base versions, but get 40+ MPG highway and 30 city.
    and offeer them Across the board, on the 3, x3, 5, x5, and even 7 series!

    I do not know where the stated fuel consumption figures come from, but following are the European figures for the current 335d versus the 335i (coupe versions):
    Power Torque liter/100km CO2
    hp lbf-ft City Highway Combined g/km
    335d 286 428 9.1 5.3 6.7(35.1 mpg) 177
    335i 306 295 13.2 6.7 9.1(25.8 mpg) 218
    As can be seen the diesel has lower Power at -6.5%, but otherwise in all other terms is superior to the gas version:
    Torque 45% higher
    Fuel consumption
    City 45% better
    Highway 26% better
    Combined 36% better
    CO2 19% less (global warming gas emission)

    these performance and economy numbers must be wrong or i don't get it. A much less expensive (lighter and better balanced) 328i manual does 0-60 in 6.3 seconds and returns 18/28mpg. If we assume the diesel gets 28mpg average and the gasoline car gets 23mpg average. The diesel is getting 21% better mileage on fuel that is right now, 15% more expensive than premium. 6% better efficiency, how much is price premium for the diesel? Needs to be very small to make sense.
