Got Wood? The 2009 Ford Flex Does

You waited long enough for the
2009 Ford Flex--and now you want that authentic Country Squire look without having to resort to shelf paper, scissors and a keen eye for straight edges. No need to worry--an aftermarket company's all set to Woody-fy your Flex and make it into something we all predicted would happen (hell, we even ran spy shots of a Flex with some kind of wrapping paper applied to it).
Auto Tech Plastics is the maker of the new Flex Woody kit. For $899, they'll give you a set of contact appliques and plastic trim that extend over the tops of the doors and the hatch area for a more seamless Woody look. The simulated grain apes teak and oak for a classic appearance not unlike that seen at this past weekend's Pebble Beach Concours, right alongside several Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang replicas and Colonel Klink's staff car. The Woody kit's guaranteed for three years, so peeling worries should be confined to your pasty skin.
You will have to apply the textures yourself--it looks easier than an Ikea bookshelf, but maybe some help would be a good thing. Auto Tech also offers professional installation, though they claim an 80-year-old grandmother has installed one. Call 800-447-8410 if you're itching to one-up her, or cruise to
their Web site.

Oh no. I thought the 'fake contact paper woodgrain paneling' look died with the 2005 Dodge Caravan.

I mean once you get the Flex then you might as well go for the panels. One idea worse than the other...

I like the look of the Flex, but I'm not one for the "woody" package. Just like on the PT cruiser, or the occasional HHR, the "woody" package needs to die. The classic woodies are great, but we need to let this part of retro die.

This car is so ugly that some try to decorate this butter box. I'm sure only Kerkorian is happy to see a car like that !

I have loved Fords all my life and the most beautifull station wagon was the 1963 Ford Country Sedan the lines were unobtrusive, my parents had one, heritage burgandy (dark maroon) with a corithian white top and a luggage rack. It looked good from any angle, simple and beautiful room for twenty kids. The Flex design works from the backend looking down toward the front, the front end is a mess, i look at it and just want to squash the hood down, to angular up right and boxy, the designer should be shown the door. i designed better looking cars in grade school.
