We'll be talking to those engineers and GM vice chairman Bob Lutz next week, as TheCarConnection.com heads to the Renaissance Center for the world debut of the Volt. Keep this page bookmarked for more photos and more details as they emerge this week--and stay tuned next Tuesday for all the coverage of the Volt we can possibly generate.

UPDATE: GM says the photo release was an accident.

Typical comments from typical idiots. What you people need to realize is what this car represents. Who cares how the car looks it is how the car performs that is important. You people seem to think that import manufacturers have it all figured out. The Yaris is one of the ugliest cars produced, the Prius is butt ugly yet everyone embraces it because it is a Toyota. The technology in the Volt is beyond what any import manufacturer is even close to coming up with, and that is the point at hand. Maybe you idiots should spend less time on the computer reading each others stupid comments and more time in the real world. Drive a GM compare it to anything on the road and tell me that GM doesnt know what they are doing. Lets not forget 2.5 out of every 10 vehicles sold in North America are GM's. If they were so out of touch that wouldn't be the case.

I used to have wet dreams about the Volt concept car. Now I have shrinkage problems after seeing the production model.

Jim, DB, you guys don't get it. Nobody is going to buy one of these thing for 40k when it looks like a 20k Malibu. The concept car was intriguing, this is not, new cutting edge technology or not. Looks mean as much or more, in America, than engineering. Are you gonna spend 40k on one?

Let's remember what this car is all about... It's technology alone has my interest. $40K? Too much!! $$30K... maybe.

I can't believe Chevy is still using the stupid Bow-Tie onthe front grill. It looks like a cartoon, ugly.
They can design an entirely new car but not a new emblem.
    Go Figure!!!

I agree with DB in referring to comments on styling as STUPID! It is this STUPID American attitude that has styling as the top priority that has resulted in the crap we have in this country called automobiles. I highly resent the laws that prevent us from receiving most of the autos Europeans can choose from in our "so called free country". The Chevy Volt is one of the first American cars I would realy like to own. However I am afraid it will be priced beyond my meens. It is about time we get some automotive technical inovation from the USA instead of Japan & Europe. Then to read a stupid comment about how bad the Chevy logo looks just desplays the stupidity of many Americans. For me, engineering & function comes way before style!

The relevant statistic should situate that market share in the context of the historical trend: down, and more down!

I would much rather have the 65 mpg Ford diesel Fiesta. Problem is the idiots at Ford won't sell it in America.

Jim: Right On! Yeah, styling is somewhat important, but not as important as what the car can DO!!! And what it can do, is SAVE OUR ENVIRONMENT! Apparently, people either don't realize that, or don't care. As for the price, yes 40,000 is a bit high. But I bet there will be all kinds of tax rebates and incentives for buying electric cars by then (2010), so I imagine it will probably be more like 35,000 or 30,000 after everything. AND, since we'll probably be paying like 10.00 or 20.00 a gallon for gas by then, that will be about 200.00 to 400.00 a month for most people in savings from gas alone! So, yeah, the monthly payment might be like, say, if you put 5,000 down, and on a 5 year loan on 30,000 at, say, 6%, about 600.00 a month (sorry, not that great on the math). So, minus the gas savings, it would only come to about 200.00 to 400.00 a month in car payment, which is still high, but definitely doable for most people.
    Thanks!

In all of this you get caught up on the Bow Tie emblem, give your head a shake. Its branding, and it has nothing to do with the issue at hand. As for all the talk of pricing lets see what the actual list price is before we write it off as too expensive. GM is one of the largest corporations in the world if you think they won't do their market research and bring the car to market at a price it won't sell for then you truly are an idiot. And for the comment about this not being new technology, who else is mass producing a vehicle with no mechanical connection to a gas engine? OR which other company had the balls to publicly announce that they will be releasing one? This is about the technology under the hood. Period. As for the market share, yes GM has lost market share from the early days of selling cars but look at the sheer amount of competitors in the market place. The fact is the amount of new product GM will be releasing in the next 3 years exceeds most other manufacturers entire line ups. GM is more relevant now than they have ever been, they have a far stronger dealer network than any other manufacturer and they have the tools in place to maintain they're place in the market. To most of you posting on this site: learn something about the car business and post based on fact instead of personal bias. GM is not the devil that all of you make it out to be and the fact is if any other manufacturer faced the scrutiny that GM does they would fold under the pressure.
