Audi Diesels in 4,800-Mile U.S. Enduro

From the folks who brought you the first Le Mans winner with a turbodiesel engine, Audi is introducing its first U.S.-sold diesels since the 1980s with a splashy 23-car caravan of Q7s, Q5s, A4s, and A3s. The vehicles will drive 4,800 miles from New York to Los Angeles in a show of endurance and efficiency.

Journalists from around the world will compete for the title of most fuel-efficient diesel driver, and TheCarConnection.com will be there next month to take part in the cross-country rally.

The brand with the four interlocking rings (symbolizing the merging of German firms Auto Union, DKW, Horch, and Wanderer) will be introducing Audi's as-yet-unseen (in the U.S.) 3.0 TDI V-6 in the Q7, Q5, and A4. Powering the A3 will be a version of the 2.0-liter TDI found in corporate parent VW's Jetta TDI Clean Diesel.

Audi boasts extreme cleanliness where emissions are concerned, with emissions compliance in all 50 states (Mercedes did it first) and with Euro 6 standards that won't go into effect until 2014 (impressive).

    Mr Padgett, with all respect, the interlinking rings were a symbol of the newly-formed Auto Union, a result of the combination of Audi, DKW, Horch, and Wanderer. When Audi was revived postwar it adopted the linked-ring emblem in its identity.

    DIESELS, MODERN, HIGH-MPG, LOW-Emissions diesels, were LONG overdue in the US. Currently, only Mercedes offers one sedan and 3 SUVs with its 3 lt diesel, and BMW is bringing its diesl , surprisingly, in the 3 series and not in the X5, X3, and even 7 6 and 7, where it can do even more good...
    If AUDI equips all these models with Diesels for 2009, its sales will improve dramatically.
    and as usual, Ford, GM, and Chrysler are caught with their collective, pitiful pants down....

    Hey Ed - actually, BMW is releasing the same 3.0 turbodiesel found in the 3-series (335d) in the X5, but only with all-wheel drive - the model is called the "X5 xDrive 35d" - how's that for a mouthful?

    yes, I remember reading this. The X5 is a far more natural candidate for the bigger diesel (the 3.0), as is the heavy 7 series, while the 3 and 5 should also get the far more fuel efficient, smaller diesels that were always on sale in Europe.
    M-B, BMW and Audi always played this game in the US market, they would only import the larger engines of any particular model, in an attempt to make some more $...and it is ironic, because with the 55, 65 and even 75 MPH limit, who really needs the larger engines HERE?

    Historical Accuracy:
    The four rings of Auto Union represent the unification of
    DKW,Horch,NSU and Wanderer.
    Post war Audi adopted the four rings!

    These figures are from steady-state driving. And I don't think steady-stage driving is a fun way to spend a week or so. If it were so fun, they wouldn't have to pay truckers.
