Pontiac G3 Emphasizes Economy, "Sporty Styling"

Still trying to decide if it is GM's excitement division, economy department, or swoopy styling central, Pontiac brings us the Daewoo-designed Chevy Aveo G3, which it claims "emphasizes value without compromising a fun driving experience." Uh-huh. This is brand engineering at its worst. Didn't they tell us the same thing when they debuted the miserable little LeMans econobox of the '80s? Surely the mighty GTO is turning over in its grave.

At 34 mpg highway, even GM's own Chevy Malibu hybrid matches its economy, and does it with far more power, panache, and comfort. Pontiac claims the G3 is "surprisingly well-equipped, with standard air conditioning," leading us to believe it might well be equipped with crank windows and a Blaupunkt stereo with two paper cone speakers. And only four speeds in the optional automatic transmission don't help its case for either performance or max economy. At least it does feature the lowest starting price of any Pontiac. But should one have to skimp on equipment and refinement just to get an affordable vehicle?

Over at Honda, they've proven you can have style, fun, and great driving dynamics with their new Fit. Come on, Pontiac. You risk alienating your high-performance fans, while offering nothing special in the economy car realm. American drivers now know that economy cars needn't be miserable and thin. Why would anyone in their right mind spend more money to get into a G3, with a starting price of $14,995, when they could get into a 2009 Fit for $14,550? Not a compelling buy, nor a compelling drive. --Colin Mathews

    Fully agree with Colin here.
And in addition, both the G3 and the "Chevy" Aveo, whose clone the G6 is, are damned DAEWOO cheapo bankrupt Korean made POS, and GM just bought the losers and rebadged them as Chevys and Pontiacs, INSTEAD OF Developing a SERIOUS and COMPETENT AND, most importantly, FUEL EFFICIENT Econocar, and 34 EPA MPG is LAUGHABLY LOW in this group.

Going to have to check myself into therapy, I wonce again agree with Ed. If Everything, anything Chevy wants to sell this POS go ahead that is their mantra. But if you are tyring to do something with Pontiac then stay the hell away from stupid things like this. It is avictim of the Corporate Fuel Efeciency laws in the US but no one will want to buy it. Those that do will be turned away from buying a Pontiac in the future as their only memory will be this throw back to the 90's and probaly 80's.
The reaosn Mercedes and BMW are spending money on small cars is they have learnt from the Japanese for many drivers this will be their first car, if they have a good experience they will generally upgrade to car within that companies range, if they have a bad memory the opposite will be true. For Chevy it doesn't matter so much they sell whitegoods on wheels and people know that (yes they make some good stuff to eg Corvette, new Camaro) but Pontiac is trying to build the brand anew. It will not do it with this car.
Just shows that GM still doesn't know what it is doing and shouldn't be allowed to kill great (once in the dark past)brands like Pontiac and Buick. What next a Buick version?

Just when I thought Pontiac was going to be relevant and be that "Excitment" they pull off this 80's crap again. I lost all faith in Pontiac. GM just do what really needs to done as much as I hate to say it....kill off Pontiac, Saturn & Buick since you clearly don't want to invest money into them. And either make GMC produce all the trucks or just make them commercial. Damn I really wanted to get a Solstice one day too.

this is god awful. Who would buy this without big rebates ?
The competition in this class is going to be fierce and these substandard daewoo vehicles aren't going to cut it.
They would be better off selling a rebadged yaris.

Obvious typo in my post, I meant of course the G3, not the G6 which is not a Daewoo clone POS.
