GMT 360 SUVs Go Out Ignominously, with Cracked Blocks and Spraying Fuel

The New York Times’ Autos section recently reported on two TSBs (Technical Service Bulletins) quietly released by GM in September that detailed problems with its GMT 360 mid-size SUVs, which the company will stop producing on December 23. Short of manufacturer recalls, TSBs “are information provided by manufacturers to mechanics and dealers’ service departments. Unless otherwise noted, automakers do not pay for these repairs beyond normal warranty coverage,” according to the Times.

In TSB 08328 issued on Sept. 23, GM explained that the 4.2-liter inline-six on some 2009 Chevrolet TrailBlazers and GMC Envoys could have cylinder bores ground too deep during their manufacture, leading to cracked engine blocks. Thankfully, only about 800 vehicles are said to be involved. Affected vehicles will require a complete engine replacement.

The Times notes another TSB, number 07076 issued on Sept. 30, which involves corrosion in the fuel-tank modular reservoir. The reservoir houses the vehicle’s fuel pump, and the corrosion could lead to fuel spraying from the vehicle. Vehicles involved are the 2002-2004 Chevy TrailBlazer, GMC Envoy, and Oldsmobile Bravada and 2004 Buick Rainier and GMC Envoy X.U.V. GM is providing some help to owners of these vehicles, extending warranties from the original three years/36,000 miles up to 10 years or 120,000 miles, whichever comes first. Additionally, customers who have already paid for this repair have the option of being reimbursed by GM.--Colin Mathews
