GM Nixes Corporate Jet Fleet

Whether it's just more cost-cutting for the cash-strapped giant, posturing before Congress to ensure its share of billions in the hotly contested domestic auto bailout, or, as Automotive News claims, "scrubbing and scrambling" after an embarrassing jet-set to Washington with begging cup in hand, GM announces today that it is completely dismantling its corporate General Motors Air Transportation Services (GMATS) at the Detroit Metro Airport.

GM states that, due to a depressed market and resultant cost cutbacks, its "travel volume no longer justifies a dedicated corporate aircraft operation." As such, they are looking at transferring their aircraft to another operator and selling four aircraft so that they can terminate the leases on those planes.

The Detroit Metro Airport travel facility will be closed for good on January 1. GM is working with the airport to find a tenant to finish out the lease term, which expires in 2009.--Colin Mathews
