A wedgy, funky little Kia concept called the Soul'ster was unveiled today at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show.
The new concept is based on the new 2010 Kia Soul hatchback, which goes on sale later in the year, and which we'll be driving shortly for a full review. The concept is spun from the same mechanicals, but Kia says it's a breezy alternative to the closed-roof car from the nose back.
The Soul'ster strikes a balance between the open-air fun of a Jeep and the impracticality of, say, a Suzuki X90. The interior does keep four seats--but the top rolls away into the roll bars to let in all the sunshine drivers can handle.
Along with the Soul'ster, the 2010 Kia Soul's base price was announced. It'll start from $13,995, significantly undercutting the likes of the Scion xB.
Stay tuned for more from the 2009 Detroit auto show, and stay tuned for a full road test on the new Soul.

I'd be interested to know what the actual mileage is on the 1.6 liter Soul. I'm a little disappointed in the figures reported for the Nissan Cube in Edmund's First Drive, they said it should be expected to deliver about 30 mpg on the EPA's highway cycle with a 1.8 liter engine. The (presumably) heavier Scion XB with a 2.4 liter engine will approach that.

I like the Soul. I saw one at the Orlando Auto Show this year, and I think I like the style of it much better than the xB....

I like all kinds of Japanese cars; I also like good American cars but call me old-fashioned since I'd never buy a Korean car... I'd be so ashamed... I still don't understand why people buy them. They're not cheap(er) cars either. The parent company Hyundai has a terrible business culture and is not even that beneficial to the regions where it sets up its plants. It gets a lot more than it gives. Let's not let them grow because it will only invite the Chinese to follow and that's the last thing we need...

Reminds me of my plug in jeep power wheels from back in the late 80s.
