A lightly modified version of Jag's latest hi-po luxosedan, the XFR (checkout Marty Padgett's report from the Detroit Auto Show), clawed its way to a rather shocking 225 mph on Bonneville's salt flats last November. No doubt overcoming the insane amount of wind resistance at such speeds was the all-new 5.0-liter V-8 fortified with the latest in supercharger technology to produce a hearty 510 hp. Piloting the craft was driver Paul Gentilozzi.
These numbers make it the fastest Jaguar ever, and show that new parent Tata Motors is intent on developing the luxury marque and taking it further from embarrassing blunders like the X-Type debacle of a decade ago.
While it's a nice battle cry of an intro for this brawny-yet-elegant new competitor joining ranks with vehicles like the BMW M5 and the Mercedes E63 AMG, a trip to the Jaguar's U.K. media site reveals that the Brits get a 3.0-liter turbodiesel version that not only scoots to 60 mph in 5.9 seconds but manages 42 mpg combined on the European cycle (numbers would be slightly lower for the U.S. EPA combined rating).
As the Detroit Auto Show progresses, literally crowded with economical cars and bristling with efficient new technology, I wonder if Jag is missing an opportunity to show that it can produce cars that are both remarkably quick and impressively efficient. After all, we are smack in a market that is currently valuing mpg more than mph.--Colin Mathews

XFR Wow!
WOW! What a badass ride. Take the best new sedan in the world (before the new XJ comes out) and give it more balls. If you can buy a Vette that goes 200mph why not a Jag? Why do they restrict these cars to 155mph. If your going to kill yourself of someone else, is there that much difference at 225mph vs 155mph? Few owners even take the car to 155mph. It's mostly just for bragging rights. Knowing it could. Can't wait for the Jag's to get the new ZF 8 speed.

the German "gentleman's agreement" between Mercedes, BMW, Porsche, and VW/Audi stipulated all top speeds be limited to 155 mph to prevent an all-out top-speed war. Jaguar honoring this agreement, I'm guessing, is just to play nice with their German comrades and avoid butting heads with the EU lawmakers.
I should also note that one can kindly request the removal of the speed limiter by, ahem, "kindly asking" your dealer, at least for the German road rockets (BMW M, Mercedes AMG, Audi RS, etc). I'm sure Jag dealers will do the same.
Still, loving those new Jags. Wonderful looks and performance across the range.
