While they would probably prefer greenbacks to green training, up to 60 "displaced" engineers (read: laid off) will receive free training to prepare them for futures in advanced, low-emission propulsion technology. General Motors, The Engineering Society of Detroit, and Michigan Tech University are combining forces to offer the teaching gratis.

The free training will come in the form of full scholarships for a course in green technology; the course runs one semester and entitles those who pass to three credits. Dates for the course are Feb. 5 to May 14 at the Engineering Society's headquarters in Southfield, Mich.

MTU faculty will lecture, and there will be hands-on labs with GM engineers at the GM Milford Proving Grounds as well as the Pontiac Powertrain headquarters. Perhaps GM is hoping to cherry pick some promising candidates for its fuel-efficient powertrains of tomorrow...--Colin Mathews
