Nestled among the sea of E-REVs, electrics, clean diesels, and fuel-sipping EcoBoosts was a nice dose of high-cube V-8 irresponsibility draped in iconic Dodge colors from the glory days of Mopar Musclecardom: Hemi Orange, TorRed, and B5 Blue. Dodge quietly introduced the Challenger R/T Classic special edition at the Detroit Auto Show by simply placing it on a stand during press days; details will be revealed later this week.

Unique to the R/T Classic are racing stripes and the original, loopy "Challenger" logo located on both front flanks as opposed to the grill where it is located on the regular production model. Hemi Orange and TorRed flavors will offer R/T tune on the 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 for 372 hp with the automatic and 376 with the newly-available six-speed manual. B5 Blue R/T Classic buyers will eventually be able to opt up to the fire-breathing 6.1-liter that powers the Challenger SRT8 and belts out more than 400 hp to the only wheels that should ever rocket a muscle car through the quarter mile: the rears.

Chrysler's tenuous future makes us worry about astonishing beasts like the Challenger; impractical guzzlers don't tend to sell well during recessions. Fingers crossed that the enthusiasts keep buying Dodge Challengers, Chevrolet Camaros, and Ford Mustangs in numbers large enough to ensure their continued existence. Streets across America would lose a serious measure of adrenaline, sonorous V-8 burble, and general grin-inducement without 'em.--Colin Mathews

    54 Mr Demographic

I bought one, Black 5.7, I get 20 miles to a gallon, no bull, I turn more heads than people at a Tennis Match. Its' quiet, its got great creature comforts, heated seats, leather, I got the mopar shifter for the automatic tranny, reminds me of my 1970 GTO, that I bought for $3,150 new at the factory, with better behavior. Yes I know its not green, but one must have some fun in life. I worked hard for it and thank god Chrysler(Dodge) allows me to..I love the growl of the exhaust, the chirp of the tires from 1st to second even with that automatic. Hang in there big three. The small cars/enviros will come. I buy one of them too.

Saw one of these yesterday on my way home from work. To be honest I didn't even know this car existed. I'd definitely drive one though. I hope Dodge sticks around long enough for a bunch of these Challengers to make it out onto the streets. If I can't have one at least I'd be able to live vicariously through others.
