Sister site AllCarsElectric.com spent a day quietly blasting around New York City in a Tesla Roadster, the all-electric icon for the petroleum-free automotive movement. Site creator and New York neurologist Lyle Dennis found the Lotus Elise-based, carbon fiber-bodied roadster to be swift, tidy, easy to charge, and to offer much the same thrills provided by a petroleum-powered equivalent.
Dennis marveled at acceleration "so strong it pinned you to your seat" as well as excellent passing power at speed. He reports the 0-60 mph sprint occurs in 3.9 seconds. A single gear for the transmission and the pushback of regenerative coasting and braking are the biggest departures from a gasoline powertrain; Dennis found both more interesting than he did disconcerting.
In summary, Dennis concluded that the $109,000 "Tesla Roadster is more about what it is than what it does." Much greater than simply a stylish, swift machine, he feels it's "the first step to a world without oil."
Fingers crossed that despite financial troubles and investors who now have less money to lend, Tesla will soon achieve mass production of its Roadster and recently teased S sedan.

How far
How far did it make on a single charge in real world environment? First step on a new road or another expensive misstep in the wrong direction? Only time will tell.

That range is realistic but it needs 240V to recharge for 3.5 hours, so it's not like you can stop at Waffle House to do that while getting your lunch... It's not very practical on road trips but I'd kill to get one anyway :-P

"World without oil"? If your local utility only operates nuclear or coal-fired power plants. Still, it's a start, albeit an expensive one.

I believe it works out to ~120 MPG with Tesla, so we could technically turn into a major oil exporter with every car like this :) The only real drawback is that I could only take one Tesla girl for a drive with me.

240V - Ridiculous!
Who has access to a 240V power source anyways? Ridiculous.... You'd have to rewire your whole house.
