In the midst of this down market, hundreds of thousands of American individuals and companies bought cars and trucks last month. Here are May's top 20 best sellers:
- Ford F-150
- Chevrolet Silverado
- Toyota Camry
- Toyota Corolla
- Honda Accord
- Honda Civic
- Ford Fusion
- Chevrolet Impala
- Nissan Altima
- Ford Escape
- Dodge Ram
- Ford Focus
- Honda CRV
- Chevrolet Malibu
- Chevrolet Cobalt
- Toyota RAV4
- Honda Odyssey
- Hyundai Sonata
- Volkswagen Jetta
- GMC Sierra
Some observations: Four of the top 20 are trucks. Surprised? Even with the specter of fuel prices rising at some undefined future point, many people need pickups. (Need is different from want ... as evidenced by the lack of full- and mid-size SUVs on the list.) Compact SUVs, however, did well (the RAV4 is still a compact in my opinion...but it's not worth fighting about). The balance of the list is what you'd expect with a couple notables; Honda's Odyssey deserves respect for making the list, but I can't fully understand the #8 ranking of the Chevrolet Impala. How can this old Chevy outsell the vastly superior and better driving Chevrolet Malibu? Thoughts?

If Chevy ditched the Impala then I think they would sell more Malibus and it would rank higher on the list. My guess is Chevy is discounting the Impala to make it look like a better bargain than the Malibu, even thought the Bu is superior in every way.

Yanks love your trucks. This isn't going to change oevrnight. Yeah some of those who bought them as status symbols or to be cool will move to whatever is latest cool, there will always be a strong market in the US for trucks, CAFE or no CAFE.
This si the thing people say G's problem was that it invested in trucks and not cars. The problem was GM only really invested in trucks and paid lip servcie to cars, but trucks are an important market and if the Obamalama's running GM don't understand this then GM is waiting for another fall when it no longer has any decent trucks to seel. Look at VW and Toyota, they spread the love around. GM and Ford need to invest in cars but must not stop investing in trucks as well.

The Impala will always appeal to the old timers who still prefer the big Ford and Mercury sedans with nice V-8s, roomy back seats and large trunks. They don't respect 4-cam V-6s or many- speed trannies - all they need is quiet and a smooth ride.

From what I have observed, the recession has put off high gas prices for a while, but not forever. If you're only planning on having the truck that you don't need for a few years and don't mind a big hit on depreciation, go ahead. But. . . Gas prices are going up relative to the US dollar, whether you like it or not, so why not start changing your habits now and beat the rush? Buy what you need, and no bigger. Buy a hybrid if you're sitting in traffic a lot, and it will save you a fortune on gas. In fact a Prius is a MID-SIZED car, but gets the best mileage of any car, including smart cars, minis and Jetta's. The money you save can pay your mortgage, buy more beer and many other wonderful things, and may help save America. If you want to buy American, buy a Ford Focus Hybrid or Escape Hybrid, they get great mileage too!
