The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has released some good news for safety-conscious shoppers thinking about the 2009 Toyota Venza or 2010 Lexus RX.
Both the Venza and RX receive top 'Good' results from the IIHS in frontal offset and side impact tests, and in the seats of both models pass the Institute's rear protection test—incorporating a dynamic test and seat/head geometry—with flying colors and another 'Good' rating.
In order to be named a Top Safety Pick, a vehicle must come with electronic stability control and earn 'Good' ratings in all front, side, and rear tests.
"Recognizing vehicles at the head of the class for safety helps consumers distinguish the best overall choices without having to sort through multiple test results," said IIHS president Adrian Lund with today's release of the results.
Even prior to these results, TheCarConnection.com had given the 2009 Toyota Venza a Safety rating of 9, out of 10, because of its abundant safety features, including active front head restraints along with stability control and a full range of airbags.
The 2010 Lexus RX 350 also carries a rating of 9 out of 10 from TheCarConnection.com—with an overall score of 8.4—and it includes thorax side-impact bags for front and rear occupants, along with knee airbags for those in front, plus stability control, side-curtain bags, and anti-lock brakes. A Pre-Collision System (PCS) is optional with the Dynamic Radar Cruise Control.

In 1980, after Joan Claybrook, head of National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, condemned the Toyota and Honda models in the initial NCAP crash test, Japan was humiliated. Within four model years, those two were among the best. They have stayed near the top in overall safety ever since. Good show.
