Report: Mercedes Benz CLC To Be Replaced With New C-Class Coupe

The CLC, based on the somewhat older C-Class Sportcoupe is what's presently on offer, but Mercedes is already thought to be working on a new C-Class Cabrio, dubbed the CLR. That paves the way for a revised two-door C-Class hardtop, though Mercedes could simply combine the two projects and build a collapsible hardtop CLR - an increasingly likely scenario these days.

According to a report from Germany's Auto Motor und Sport, Mercedes is planning to phase the current CLC out at the midpoint of the current C-Class's lifecyle, sometime next year, and replace it with the new car in 2011. The best guesses indicate a smaller Sportcoupe hatch will also be launched around this time, though this will be based on the next-generation A-Class platform.

If - or when - the new C-Class Coupe does roll off the line, expect it to offer the same options and feature the same powertrains as the rest of the C-Class lineup. In the U.S., the car will have to face off against some tough competition, however, including the Audi A5 and BMW 3-series Coupe. Lexus has yet to put an entry into the segment, though talk of a coming IS Coupe is brewing.
