The completely redesigned 2010 Subaru Legacy and 2010 Subaru Outback—which we've reported on extensively this summer—also now have the honor of being named among the safest vehicles in their class.
They've both been given the Top Safety Pick designation from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The IIHS gives the award to vehicles that both achieve the top "good" rating in the institute's front, side, and rear crash tests and are equipped with electronic stability control.
In its additional published test details on the 2010 Subaru Legacy and Outback, the IIHS says, "After the dummy moved forward into the airbag, it rebounded into the seat without its head coming close to any stiff structure that could cause injury." The institute adds more positive news—that force measures from the test dummy "indicate a low risk of any significant injuries in a crash of this severity."
Both the 2010 Outback and Legacy come with standard front side airbags and side-curtain bags, along with ABS with Brake Assist, an electronic parking brake, and an electronically operated Hill Holder function that aids safety on uphill starts especially. Subaru's standard all-wheel drive might also be considered a safety feature.
Subaru is no stranger to top safety ratings. The Forester, Impreza, and Tribeca have been repeat winners, and this will be the Legacy's fourth year with the Top Safety Pick designation. From 2006 through 2009, the Subaru Legacy has achieved top "good" ratings across the board, and with the introduction of stability control as an option in 2007 it earned its first Top Safety Pick award.
Neither the 2010 Subaru Legacy nor the 2010 Subaru Outback have yet been tested in the federal government's New Car Assessment Program (NCAP), which is administered by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

There goes the resale value on Volvo's. The Legacy looks to good to be such a safe car.
Good safety but I'm not convinced about the styling. It seems like with every new model Subaru gets worse and worse.

Let's face it -- Subaru just makes some quality cars. The just need to improve their reliability and they are right there with Honda/Toyota.

I'm not thrilled about the styling either, especially compared to the very pretty outgoing 2005-2009 model. But the new car is better in pretty much every other way, and the safety rating is just icing on the cake.
And, btw, Subaru pretty much telegraphed this, saying at their intros that they "expected" the car would get five-star ratings. THAT's confidence (and/or a boatload of high-intensity computer crash-test simulation).

I'd put safety before style any day, but of-course it's best to have them both!
