The 2010 Audi A3 TDI goes on sale later this year for a base price of $30,775, the automaker announced today.

The diesel version of the littlest Audi you can buy may come with a not-so-small sticker price--but it's among the cleanest oil-burners yet, thanks to VW/Audi's latest iteration of clean-diesel technology. Like the larger Q7 TDI, the A3 TDI adopts new catalytic converters that combine with low-sulfur diesel fuel to make the latest A3 50-state-friendly.

The new 2.0-liter turbodiesel puts out 140 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque, as it does in other VW Group products. The A3 TDI attains a highway fuel economy rating of 42 mpg, Audi adds, and it gets 30 percent better fuel economy than a similarly sized gas engine would--while emitting 20 percent less carbon dioxide. City economy is 30 mpg, Audi adds.

Standard equipment will include leather seats, a cargo net and folding rear seats, as well as S-line exterior trim. Options will include Audi's navigation system and real-time traffic data; Bluetooth; a music interface for iPods and MP3 players; Bose speakers; and a Titanium package with dark grey trim, wood and leather upgrades, auto-dimming mirrors and LED daytime running lights.

The 2010 A3 TDI goes on sale in November, around the time that the similar 2010 Volkswagen Golf TDI arrives in America.

Might be worth it if it was quattro. Who the in the hell is going to fork out $30k for a front wheel drive compact car?

However, unlike the Q7 the diesel is the same one in the Jetta TDI that does not need to be refilled periodically with Adblue. Hey Audi, when will Quattro be available on the A3 TDI? That is when it will really be something special. VW believes in not giving customers what they fully want. If they did the Jetta TDI, Golf TDI, and A3 TDI would be available with either the 4 motion or Quattro (all wheel drive systems).

And given that the Golf TDI, also a 5-door hatch, which uses the same platform & engine, is $8K cheaper ... which one is the better value?
