The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) has opened an investigation regarding inadvertent airbag deployment on some Ford F-150 pickups.
In the eight consumer complaints that prompted the investigation, the driver airbag had deployed unexpectedly, either when starting the engine or shortly thereafter.
Five of the eight F-150 owners who experienced the issue suffered injuries from the airbag deployment. The investigation summary says that one tech attributed wire chaffing as the cause or potential cause.
So far, the investigation covers only the 2005 Ford F-150, but if you've experienced this problem with any late-model F-150, log in your account at ODI's Defects and Recalls page.
The Ford F-150 is the longtime best-selling vehicle in the U.S. market, displaced only in the past couple of years by the economic conditions and the run toward more fuel-efficient vehicles. During calendar year 2004 and 2005, Ford sold more than 900,000 F-150 trucks each year, according to Automotive News data.

That would give someone the type of PTSD that would make them never want to start a car again.

They sold about 900K in the last two years, but this year? They might be lucky to do 400K.

"..Five of the eight F-150 owners who experienced the issue suffered injuries from the airbag deployment" - that is a huge number! what will be the end of Ford?

What IS it with Ford and safety problems on the F-Series pickups? The 1997-2004 generation just folded up in frontal offset crashes. The IIHS rated it "poor" and the video is truly frightening to watch:

Well, at least it's not like it affects the most popular vehicle in America or something...oh, wait...
