WTF: Canadian Truckers Busted For Smoking Behind The Wheel

Like red light cameras, prohibitions on smoking in the workplace have become common in much of the Western world. But what happens when your workplace is your car -- or perhaps, your big rig? It's not such a hypothetical question in Ontario, where ten truckers have been hit with a $305 (Canadian) fine for smoking in the cabs of their trucks since the Smoke-Free Ontario Act was passed in May 2006. Now, we're not big fans of smoking, but maybe the Canadian authorities need something else to do. [NationalPost via JV]

I actually live in Ontario and I think that is awesome. Granted for truckers you may be the only one that is in the truck, but that is where you work...so tough titty.
If there's one thing I hate, if I have to take a cab somewhere, the last thing I want to do is sit in one that smells like stale cigarette smoke, that is the worst.
I say SUCK IT UP SMOKERS, face it...you stink.

I agree that smoking in taxis is AWFUL. In New York, the cab drivers are notorious for burning incense, too, which is possibly worse. My problem, though, is that big rigs are not passenger vehicles. They are private areas, not public, like a taxi, so they should be treated somewhat differently.

As a former smoker myself, I feel some compassion for puffers, but I think the push to get people to quit smoking is VERY important. (And you guys do a much better job of it than we do, with your VERY FRIGHTENING messages on cig packs.) Still, I think this may be legally iffy.
