At the 2001 Detroit auto show, Ford debuted some intriguing technology: airbag-enabled seat belts. After years of additional testing and refinement, it appears that the devices are finally ready for prime time. They'll soon be available as an option on next-gen Ford Explorers; afterward, they'll debut in Europe and other markets. While we're waiting for news about their appearance on other Ford vehicles in the U.S., there's a short video about the belts below. Pretty nifty stuff.

Sounds like a great idea. Ford has really stepped up development and availability of safety features. Will they continue in this way without Volvo?

@ Allan do you think that it was volvo that influenced ford to add all these safety features?

Allan, Believe it or not, Ford is one of the leaders in the auto industry when it comes to safety - bettering Volvo in some areas.
No surprise that it has more models with top IIHS safety ratings than any other automaker.

definitely cool stuff. one of those "why didn't i think of that" as it seems pretty straightforward / practical. hope to see them deploy it widely after some initial feedback and results are garnered.

So, over-under on time until one of these things squeezes some little kid too hard? I give it 3 months from first sale to first lawsuit.

most interesting to me: "cold gas" means not whatever it is they use now, which leaves burns on the face of whoever hits it. Question: will they start using this COLD gas in regular airbags so anyone who slams into an inflated airbag does NOT end up with burns on their faces?
