The next-generation version of the Suzuki Swift, due out next year, isn't quite a sure thing for the U.S. market; but we've been told it's been engineered this time with federal regulations in mind. If the 2011 Suzuki Swift does come to these shores, it would take on the growing segment of sporty subcompacts, including the 2011 Ford Fiesta, 2011 Mazda2, and 2011 Volkswagen Polo.

Is it 1973 all over again? Volkswagen is amping up for a fuel-economy battle with Honda and Ford, right here in America, with a new hatchback. Only this time, some of the names have changed, and so have the rules. Come 2011 or so, it's the VW Polo readying for a fight with the Honda Fit and Ford Fiesta. Preview: 2011 Ford Fiesta

Ford has finally confirmed that its European-styled Fiesta hatchback is set to make its U.S. debut at the 2009 Los Angeles Auto Show in December. Since Ford started promoting the car through its Fiesta Movement back in March, more than 50,000 people have expressed interest--97% of whom currently do not drive a Ford.

U.S.-spec cars are expected to feature a 1.6-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine with twin independent variable valve timing. This should ensure enough pep for the American palate, while likely planting the Fiesta among the most efficient non-hybrids on offer.
