Nissan Celebrates 40 Years Of Making Zs

In the 1970s and 80s, there were a handful of cars that screamed "badass": obviously the Firebird and the Trans Am made the cut, but the list also included the Mazda RX7, the unlikely Buick Regal, and the Datsun 280Z.  Since becoming a Nissan, the Z has gone a bit more upscale, but it's still a source of inspiration and envy. To celebrate the model's 40th birthday, Nissan is launching an anniversary model Z, which is set to hit showrooms next spring.

Who would dare to compare the Porsche Boxster--it's only the reincarnation of the 550 Spyder, you know--to a Datsun?

We would, and we're not the only ones. During the recent press preview for the 2010 Nissan 370Z Roadster, the Japanese carmaker's team laid it out in PowerPoint: the Z's a bargain Boxster, minus the fuss and admittedly, minus the fancy badge.

Is the badge enough to command an extra $20,000? With a revamped look, a shorter wheelbase, snappy handling and a luscious V-6 under the hood, the 370Z Roadster and Coupe are lower-priced than the Boxster and Cayman, but they're hardly cut-rate in the performance department....

2010 Nissan 370Z Roadster Priced

The 2010 Nissan 370Z Roadster hits showrooms in September with a base price of--fittingly--just under $37,000.

The new convertible is offered in four distinct versions: base Roadster with manual or automatic transmission, and Touring with automatic or manual. The base car with Nissan's new seven-speed automatic stickers at $38,270. The Touring version adds a six-CD Bose sound system, XM, Bluetooth and leather ventilated seats; with the manual it's priced at $40,520, and with the automatic, it's $41,820.

Options include a Sport package with 19-inch wheels and sport brakes, and a navigation system with USB audio connectivity.
