After a year of financial and political turmoil, and a shotgun marriage to Italy's Fiat Group, the new Chrysler is unveiling a five-year plan today that takes on a fast-paced, ambitious overhaul of the company's cars and trucks.

The joint management of the Fiat/Chrysler group has confirmed already today that the current Viper will disappear next summer, to be replaced in 2012 by a Fiat-derived model. Chrysler board member Alfredo Altavilla has informed the press that Chrysler and Fiat are working on an electric car. Although he didn't provide specifics, Altavilla did say that the R&D process is "going very well" and that Chrysler is providing electric propulsion technology for the vehicle.

The news is notable because it's the first mention we've heard of a Chrysler/Fiat EV since the companies were merged in June. We're not likely to learn anything new about the vehicle before CEO Sergio Marchionne unveils the company's five-year plan on November 4 (formerly mid-October),  but it's never too early for speculation, right? The board of Chrysler Group met last Friday to approve the newly restructured company's five-year product plan, and although the full document won't officially be released until mid-November, a handful of the plan's details have already begun leaking out.

The most recent rumors concern two of Chrysler's low-selling sedans: the Chrysler Sebring and the Dodge Avenger.
