Apart from the buzz surrounding the 2011 Mercedes Benz E-class Wagon, there's also been news of the Cadillac CTS-V SportWagon and Honda's likely U.S. launch of an Acura wagon based on the popular Acura TSX. Now comes a new rendering of the next-generation BMW 5-Series Touring Wagon, set to appear in late 2010, approximately a year after the debut of its 5-Series sedan sibling.

Generational biases are nearly impossible to overcome when it comes to cars and image, and what types of cars are hot or not. At least until recently, much of the Baby Boomer generation, which has held most of the new-car buying power, has been decidedly anti-wagon.

My generation, the young side of Gen X plus Gen Y, has liked wagons all along; I can't remember a time when my peers considered them uncool. Whether or not it goes back to the knee-jerk resistance to the Plymouth Voyager minivans and Ford Explorer SUVs that our parents' generation gravitated toward, we really love our sport wagons.

Since the advent of customized vans in the late 1970s -- and subsequently SUVs in the early 1990s -- wagons haven't gotten a lot of attention from consumers. True, many companies continue to produce them, but they typically lack the snazzy, front-page appeal of crossovers and other sporty people-carriers.
