WTF Marketing: Tesla Tea Party (But Where's The Mad Hatter?)

WTF Marketing: Tesla Tea Party (But Where's The Mad Hatter?)

Some of us miss the days of wacky local advertising. You know, like when your nutty dealer down the street filmed commercials in a garbage can to drive home a theme? (The one we remember best involved a guy in a chicken suit who claimed that his cars were "cheeper". Stupid, we know, but kind of homey and charming, too.) Anyway, in Toronto, the William Ashley china shop has a history of balancing vehicles on fine dinnerware. The store's current display involves a Tesla Roadster balanced on teacups, hovering above sod-filled placemats. If Elon Musk shows up as the Mad Hatter, we'll order formal service for eight. Tesla Motors Adds A Factory, Loses A Lawsuit (In A Good Way)

It's a great news day for Tesla Motors: not only is the company moving into new digs in Palo Alto, California, but also Tesla's co-founder and former CEO Martin Eberhard has dropped his lawsuit against the automaker and current CEO Elon Musk.

As for that first item: Tesla announced yesterday that it will lease a 350,000 square-foot facility in the Stanford Research Park in Palo Alto, where it will develop and manufacture components for its all-electric vehicles. The bulk of those components will be electric powertrains and chargers, which Tesla already sells to one of its larger shareholders, Daimler, and which will likely be used in the...

Tesla Turns A Corner -- And A Profit

Tesla Turns A Corner -- And A Profit

Tesla Motors -- the flashy electric automaker capable of evoking schadenfreude in even the most enthusiastic EV fan -- met two major milestones in July: the company sold a record number of Tesla Roadsters, and perhaps more importantly, it netted $1 million on $20 million of gross income.

In all, the company sold 109 Tesla Roadsters in July, and we'll assume that included in that number are at least a few Tesla Roadster Sport models, which the company began delivering last month. (The standard Roadster rings in at $101,500, while the Sport model retails for $120,000.) Tesla credits its newfound profitability to reduced costs and higher...
