Now that you've read all about the 2010 Volkswagen GTI, we've turned our attention to the next steps down the performance ladder at VW. Don't judge just yet: with the 2010 VW Golf and Golf TDI, Volkswagen's not dropping completely off the performance map. In fact, with the clean-diesel turbo four TDI, the GTI and the base gas-engined models, the Golf now has three different ways to re-establish itself among the compact hatchbacks of choice.

The difficulty this year, though, will be convincing many folks there's actually a new Golf....

Most ordinary gasoline models look like guzzlers next to the hybrids—and a few compact diesel models—that dominate the upper echelon of this year's EPA fuel economy ratings. For instance, according to the EPA's Fuel Economy Guide information released last week, a 2010 Toyota Prius will cost less than half as much to keep fueled for a year's worth of driving than the seemingly fuel-efficient four-cylinder, all-wheel-drive 2010 Toyota RAV4. According to EPA estimates, the savings would rack up to $850; and that's with gas prices at a relatively low $2.58 a gallon.

At least you're not driving a 2010 Lamborghini Murcielago (8 mpg City) or a 2010...

In an interview with the New York Times, Volkswagen's head designer, Klaus Bischoff, has indicated that Volkswagen plans to create vehicles targeted squarely at American preferences and tastes in the near future. More importantly, he believes that doing so will benefit VW's bottom line: "Designing cars specifically for the American market will pay off for Volkswagen."

Bischoff admits that none of the VW models currently on sale in the U.S. really speak to American consumers on their own terms, but he has high hopes for a new car that's working its way down the pipeline: a midsize vehicle that will be produced at Volkswagen's...
