Think that the design of the Volkswagen New Beetle is more hideous than iconic?

Apparently you're not alone. Business Week has posted its "Fifty Ugliest Cars of the Past 50 Years," including a number of models present and past, and the New Beetle is just one of the newer and still-produced models on the list. Others include the Cadillac Escalade, Chevrolet Avalanche, Chrysler PT Cruiser, Honda Element, Hummer H2, Jeep Compass, Nissan Cube, and Toyota Prius.

They're particularly tough on the Escalade, sounding more like SUV-haters than design critics: "The perfect car design if fuel, practicality, maneuverability, and class mean nothing...

Most of the United States now require that you insure your vehicle before you can register it. Enforcement, however, varies considerably. As we learned recently, in New York state, you can be arrested for driving an uninsured vehicle if you incur a moving violation in it that would otherwise net you just a traffic ticket.

But it's a lot tougher elsewhere. In the UK, cars without insurance are seized by the police.

As the BBC tells us, "Drivers have two weeks to obtain the documents and reclaim their vehicles or they will be permanently confiscated. High value cars are supposed to be auctioned off, with the money pumped back into policing."

You might be able to swing quite a deal today on one of the most luxurious off-road-worthy barges, but be prepared to pay extra—over and over again—in your insurance premiums.

The 2009 Mercedes-Benz G-Class, 2009 Hummer H2, and 2009 Range Rover rank as the most expensive SUVs to insure, according to the insurance shopping site Insure.com.

The G-Class has especially expensive parts, while the H2 is known to cause way more damage than average to other vehicles when in an accident; the Range Rover, on the other hand, is a theft target.
