That's the verdict after last weekend's big Monterey auctions, long considered some of the top sales of the year, and strong indicators of what's moving and shaking.

According to the LA Times, this year's Monterey auctions together made more than $116 million; that's down from last year's pre-stock-market-plunge $130 million total, but very respectable all considering.

Rumor: Lamborghini Reventon Roadster Cruising To Frankfurt

Rumor: Lamborghini Reventon Roadster Cruising To Frankfurt

Rumors persist that Lamborghini will unveil a Reventon Roadster at the Frankfurt Auto Show this September. All across the interwebs, Lambo-heads are a-titter, guesstimating that only nine or ten of the supercars will be built, each featuring a snazzy 670 bhp V12 and a pricetag of €1.15 million. (Before taxes, naturally.) The company itself has made no statement on the matter, but professional athletes and Russian mobsters might want to bring their checkbooks to Germany next month. We say that's bad news because in scientific terms, Cash-for-Clunkers has caused a short-term, artificial adjustment of U.S. auto sales data. Without its effect, July sales would likely have been in keeping with the rest of 2009 -- which is to say, weak but on the mend. There's no sort of "control group" in this experiment, unless we consider supercar manufacturers like Lamborghini, whose models...
