September 11, 2001: The Auto Aftermath [9/11 Remembered]

Editor's note: In the eight years since terrorists attacked America, TheCarConnection's team has tried to make sense of what happened, what it meant to our country and what it means today. Still...we're wordless. We do know what happened to the little demimonde of cars in the immediate area after the World Trade Center towers collapsed. So on this day of remembrance, we're simply re-running this poignant column by TCC alumnus Mike Davis, the most respected auto historian with us today.

Cash for Clunkers Ends Under Budget, Sort Of

Car dealers are happy, the White House may be happy--and taxpayers might be happy, depending on their point of view, that the Cash for Clunkers program ("CARS") ended this past weekend under its final $3 billion budget.

The Associated Press estimates the sales stemming from the $3500 to $4500 rebates for old gas-guzzling cars produced about 700,000 new-vehicle sales, after two years of sales declines in the U.S. auto market.

The final tally for sales of 690,114 clunker trade-ins translates into $2.88 billion spent on the clunker rebates, the AP adds. That's under the final allocated amount, but significantly more than the $1 billion...

We, The People, Call These The License Plates of Freedom

The Schoolhouse Rock generation knows it by heart, but for the Glenn Beck generation needing a phonetic, mnemonic aid for our U.S. Constitution, they're in luck.

Gee-whiz site AutoMotto stumbled again over this collection of license plates that sort of spells out the preamble to the U.S. Constitution (the "opening credits"). Created in 1987 with vanity plates from all 50 states and Washington, D.C., the prison-labor Preamble is now a part of the vast Smithsonian collection.
